I love Jason Pargin, but if he's saying that media outlets etc. should have platformed MAGA more to prevent all of this, I very much disagree

The problem with comparing this to things like parental advisories is that those were applied to art & entertainment, not deliberate political efforts to dismantle civilized society itself. Artists thumb our noses at our own mistakes & hypocricies but they aren't trying to game the system in order
to gain power the same system was designed to stop anyone from exercising.
We're in this mess because fascist worldviews were normalized. This would not have been prevented by normalizing them more. We're back to the "let arsonists burn every building just a little bit to keep them from burning down some buildings entirely" sort of argument - which isn't desirable even if it worked, obvi, but also it doesn't because arsonists don't work that way.
Of course he isn't wrong about
the rightward trend in kids; I've seen this up close, an experience which showed me that the answer isn't to engage with rightwing content or talking points. It's about talking to your kids & making it clear what's wrong with that content & those people, in terms they can engage with.
- so yes, Jason's right that just screaming FASCIST! & leaving it at that doesn't solve the problem, but then I don't actually think anyone ever said it would. It's more a case of someone calmly explaining
how something is literally fascism & then everyone accusing them of screaming FASCIST!
- which, by the way, you might notice is the exact opposite of some MAGAt screaming fascist, racist & sexist epithets as spittle flies from their distended mouth & then everyone pretending like they were making a calm & coherent argument of legitimate grievance.
Like I said, I like this guy; he's one of my favorite authors & commentators - I'm a little dismayed at hearing him being this un-nuanced... /
