Ashwin is a Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the QUT node of ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S) and the QUT Digital Media Research Centre (DMRC). Recently, he has published work in Social Media + Society analyzing the far-right site Gab and a blockchain-based system called D-Tube. In this interview, we talk about a new project Ashwin is pursuing, focusing on decentralized social media, as well as the problems of cryptocurrencies in alternative social media.

Terwijl de wetenschap al in zwaar weer verkeert - de opleiding Aardwetenschappen aan de VU moet bijvoorbeeld verdwijnen, bleek afgelopen maand -, is er óók een tegenreactie van ongekende omvang van de Nederlandse universiteiten en hogescholen.

Our university's webpage managmnt system won't allow us to add or update a webpage (including our faculty pages) which include the banned words (such as "inclusive" and "diversity"). If we have a journal title with those words, even if it's about bacteria, we have to use an alternative symbol in the banned word that eludes the surveillance algorithm.

Everyone, please share a moment to wish curses upon the rector of my visiting PhD student's home university, who is holding his bursary cheque hostage until he flies back to his home country to collect it IN PERSON.

Even more infuriating, it's an external funder! They gave his bursary cheque to his university, and the university won't pass it on!
