It's been more a third of a century since most of the key ideas needed to make sense of autistic experience were formulated.

It's encouraging to see people finally starting to listen, but frustrating that it's taken so long, and infuriating that so many people (and organisations) still haven't caught up.

I wrote about the key lessons people should have learnt by now from the autistic community.

A bookshelf full of books by autistic writers — I’m not up for typing up the full list, sorry! If anyone would be up for doing it for me and sending it over, I’d love that.

@hzulla @Fuchskind And that #blind kid who got told "don't do X thing, people will think you're autistic" may have *actuallyautistic@a.gup.pe* been autistic. Not all #blindAutistics necessarily look like the classic autistic look either. Some of us look perfectly normal, and believe me when I say that some of us normal-looking #blind #autistics have spent a *bunch* of energy maintaining that normal appearance because it was expected, but are paying for it now.

This is my first #AutismAcceptanceMonth. Before last September I didn't know I was autistic. I'm still learning to accept and love myself. It's been a crazy journey, but I wouldn't trade it for anything else. It's been wonderful to share these self-discovery moments with the autistic community especially here in the Fediverse. You've always been so kind to me. Thank you. I know I don't post a lot, but that's ok. I don't think I need to post a lot to let you know I appreciate you. Just knowing there's a whole community of us here makes me feel safe in a world that is constantly vile towards us. And autism acceptance month should be every month.

To allistics: You should be doing more. You should be loving us, not pitying us. You should be admiring us, not trying to turn us into something we'll never become. Instead you should be helping us become whatever we want to become. We're diverse, beautiful, and we'll keep resisting and fighting to be loved, accepted, supported, and admired.

Hi, I am new here.

I am here to find other people with #autism.

I am mid 30 and just slowly processing that I might have it. Things make sense slowly. I hope it helps to be here and connect with other people and talk about it, because in my real life I struggle with that.

Not diagnosed. Not ready for that quite yet and also not sure if I even should. Curious about your opinions on that..

Excited and bit scared to meet you all!

Thank you to the #ADHD, #Dyslexic and #VisionImpaired people here on mastadon who asked for audiobooks of my writings. The more people tell me their access needs, the better position I am in to encourage/ convince my publishers to make my work #Accessible.

Delighted my latest publisher agreed to make an #Audiobook of Wired Our Own Way; An Anthology of #Autistic Irish voices, which will be released tomorrow. Not sure all the platforms it will be on yet.

Also about Autism Acceptance Month: @stimpunks has a great list of articles about how you can be an ally not only in April but all year round:

I know I've posted in the autism-related hashtags a few times in the last hour. I'm not used to posting so much (will stop now) – I just thought this information is timely to share with April coming soon. Consider it an infodump / penguin pebbling! ❤️

Maybe it's because I'm #autistic but this shit is the opposite of helpful when you're lacking the word for a specific complex emotion (especially if it isn't your mothers tongue you're lacking it in, as emotions often don't have 1:1 translations).

Also google image searching for emotions is similarly shit.

Is there a kind of picture database with people showing all different kinds of emotions in real world settings to scroll through with descriptions in multiple languages?

Exciting to see the #book I edited about #Autistic Irish adults so prominently displayed in a bookshop- not confined to psychology or self help as usual, but displayed on a "State of the Nation" stand right inside thr door of Hodges Figgis, Dublin.

#autism I find that a lot of #autistic people speak about their own autistic experiences as if they're true for all autistic people. But autism is a heterogeneous condition and the saying that if you know one autistic person that you know one autistic person is true.

Some ways in which I differ from commonly talked about autistic traits:

1. Sensory sensitivities are relatively mild and mostly related to clothing issues.

2. Struggles a lot more with executive function and working memory, but not enough to also qualify for an ADHD diagnosis.

3. Not a terribly high masker; I don't have enough self-control to keep from stimming in public and not enough social awareness to alter my presentation drastically to please NTs.

4. My neurodivergent traits interfere with me being able to conform to a lot gender based expectations.

5. I don't experience speech shutdowns because of my high verbal ability.

6. I don't experience aleixythemia; in the past had more issues with lacking emotional control but have learned to overcome this to a large degree.

What ways do YOU differ from common social media narratives about autism?
