Maybe kinda but really early March is still winter here. After warm and dry weather for a while, we had fresh snow Monday- not cold, just near average- a little above freezing daytime, colder nights. cohanNo idea whether it is still alive but dormant at this point or dead- does that look like damage on upper abdomen between the wing cases? I handled it very carefully and moved it since I was about to cut up the tree for firewood. cohan1/2 I found this Red Flat Bark Beetle Cucujus clavipes on a dead poplar tree that fell during January windstorms. Presumably it was overwintering under the bark ( I believe adults can overwinter?) If it was exposed all that time it was subjected to temps as low as -30C highs to +10ish, snow, melt etc. I handled it carefully, moving it as I was about to cut up the tree for firewood. It's not uncommon for me to see owl pellets or signs of them hunting on the snow (wing marks etc) but I don't often (not even every year) see the actual birds!
