Jupiter Rowland@Ben Pate 🤘🏻 Not everyone will want to offer their music on Bandwagon for money. Some may want to give it away for free for various reasons (non-commercial license, German hobbyist artists not wanting to hassle with the German tax system and GEMA etc.), and Funkwhale may not be a viable option for them. At the same time, they may not want to or even be able to pay the same prices for anything beyond basic functionality as musicians or bands who intend to actually make money with their music.

Some features should remain free for music that's offered for free. For example, it shouldn't be lossless downloads that a musician or a band has to pay for as a feature, but charging money for lossless downloads. Having everyone pay for e.g. offering FLAC downloads favours commercial artists, and the anti-capitalist parts of the Fediverse will criticise you for that.

Alternatively, you could make the license choosable from a pull-down list per song or per album or for an entire account. And when a commercial license (or any license that isn't decidedly non-commercial) is selected, certain features are greyed-out or removed unless they're paid for. At the same time, when a non-commercial license is selected, the UI elements for charging money are greyed out or removed.

Also, if you ever plan to open-source and decentralise Bandwagon, you can't expect all instances to charge the same for the same. Even if you hard-code in what must be paid for, the moment Bandwagon is open-source, there will be at least one fork where certain or all payments are not hard-coded anymore. Not only will some musicians or bands prefer that fork for their own instances, but it's even likely that public instances of such a fork will be launched.

At that point, your pricing calculation will become moot.

#Long #LongPost #CWLong #CWLongPost #FediMeta #FediverseMeta #CWFediMeta #CWFediverseMeta #Bandwagon

Jupiter Rowland@Alison Wilder Because if you want full-blown user rights and all the same features as a local user on all over 30,000 Fediverse instances, you need a local user account on each one of them.

This means two things:

If you come over to the Fediverse for the first time, and you register your first account on Mastodon, you automatically also register an account on 30,000+ more instances.

If you decide to host your own instance of whatever, and you spin it up for the first time, your instance immediately creates tens of millions of user accounts. One for everyone who has ever joined the Fediverse. Because anyone may decide to come over to your instance and use it, just like so.

For one, this is utter overkill.

Besides, this is technologically impossible. This would require all Fediverse instances to know all other Fediverse instances. With no exceptions. Like, if I start up my own (streams) instance for the first time, and half a second later, someone on the other side of the globe starts up a Gancio instance, they would immediately have to know each other. And all the other instances in the Fediverse.

And, of course, it would require a newly-launched instance to know all Fediverse users. Again, with no exception.

How and from which source are they supposed to know?

That said, there is a single sign-on system for the Fediverse. It's called OpenWebAuth. It was created by @Mike Macgirvin 🖥️ (creator of Friendica and all its descendants) in the late 2010s already for now-defunct Zap, a fork (of a fork?) of Hubzilla which, in turn, is a fork of the currently hyped Facebook alternative Friendica. It was backported to Hubzilla in 2020. Everything that came after Zap, including the still existing streams repository, got it, too.

However, first of all, OpenWebAuth is only fully implemented on Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte. Plus, it has client-side support on Friendica. This means that Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte recognise logins on all four, but Friendica doesn't recognise logins from anywhere.

As for Mastodon, OpenWebAuth implementation was actually developed to the point of an official merge request in Mastodon's GitHub repository. As far as I know, it was rejected. Mastodon won't implement OpenWebAuth, full stop.

Besides, it doesn't give you all the same power as a local user. You can't log into Friendica, go to a Hubzilla hub and create a wiki or a webpage or a CalDAV calendar, just like so.

OpenWebAuth is only for guest permissions. Because on Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte, permissions are everything.

For example, let's assume you have an account and a channel on (streams). Let's also assume that your (streams) channel and this Hubzilla channel of mine here are connected. Furthermore, let's assume that I've decided to only allow my own full connections to see my profile.

If you're logged out, and you go to my profile page, you see nothing.

But then you log in. And you come back to my profile page (provided your browser is configured so that the Hubzilla hub that I call home is allowed to create cookies). My home hub recognises your login on (streams). It identifies you as you, as one of my contacts. Thus, it identifies you as someone who is permitted to see my profile.

And all of a sudden, you see my profile.

That, for example, is what OpenWebAuth is for.

#Long #LongPost #CWLong #CWLongPost #FediMeta #FediverseMeta #CWFediMeta #CWFediverseMeta #Fediverse #Friendica #Hubzilla #Zap #Streams #(streams) #Forte #SingleSignOn #OpenWebAuth

Not unlisted. Private. Most fediverse software will honour this today; and it doesn't require yet another "pretend permission". Like unlisted.

And Mike should know. He brought things to the Fediverse like actually working permissions. Including permissions on two levels to quote-post any content on a channel. Readily available right now at least on Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte.

Also, this is what people on Friendica and its descendants have been using quote-posts for since 2010.

You will be notified when someone quotes you.

You already are when someone on Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams) or Forte quote-posts one of your posts.

As for Pleroma, Misskey and their forks, you aren't notified right now, and I've got my doubts that you will be after this change.

Also, "quote" and "quote-post" are two different things. Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte can do both. "Quote" is what I'm doing right here. Whether or not you're notified depends on whether or not you're mentioned.

And blocking quotes is even less possible. A quote only consists of a pair of BBcode tags plus the quoted text in-between. And on Friendica and all its descendants, you don't work with a WYSIWYG editor by default, but you have to get your hands dirty on raw markup code.

You will be able to withdraw your post from the quoted context at any time.

Again, probably not if someone on Pleroma, Misskey or one of their forks quote-posts you.

And definitely not if someone on Friendica or one of its descendants quote-posts you.

The difference is that a quote-post on Pleroma, Misskey or one of their forks is actually a reference to the original. Two of them still exist.

One is intentionally nameless, intentionally brandless, intentionally not a project and intentionally released into the public domain. Since the community needed to address to it by something, they took the name of the code repository (which needed a name), put parentheses around it and called it (streams).

It's a fork (2021)
of a fork (Roadhouse; 2021)
of three forks (Osada, Mistpark 2020 a.k.a. Misty, Redmatrix 2020; 2020)
of a fork (Zap; 2018)
of maybe another fork (Osada; non-nomadic; 2018; if Zap was forked from Osada rather than directly from Hubzilla;)
of Hubzilla.

(streams) is reduced in features and connectivity in comparison with Hubzilla, but so were the first Osada and Zap. However, in terms of permission control and nomadicity, it's at least up-to-par with Hubzilla. In fact, it isn't quite as difficult to use as Hubzilla because permission handling has been adapted what the Fediverse of the 2020s actually requires as opposed to what a hypothetical Fediverse of the mid-2010s centred around the Red Matrix would require.

I've made a series of tables that compare Mastodon, Friendica, Hubzilla and (streams). Forte is a direct fork of (streams). It's highly experimental because all support for the Nomad protocol was removed, and it has to rely on ActivityPub for nomadic identity. Thus, it is not officially released yet, it does not have public instances, and it is not recommended as a stable, reliable daily driver yet.

#Long #LongPost #CWLong #CWLongPost #FediMeta #FediverseMeta #CWFediMeta #CWFediverseMeta #Fediverse #Mastodon #Friendica #Hubzilla #Streams #(streams) #Forte
Jupiter Rowland@Georgiana Brummell First of all, I've just noticed that you seem to not have joined the Friendica support forum yet. As far as I know, you can't post to a Friendica group/forum without fully connecting to it first.

As for the accessibility issues: To most people, it appears like Friendica has only just been made since they haven't heard of it before mid-January. But actually, Friendica is from 2010. And its frontend is largely stuck in the early 2010s, including technologically.

Friendica has always been a spare-time hobbyist project. It was mostly developed by one single man for almost two years. That guy is a protocol designer and not a frontend developer. Also, I think Friendica never had more than two regular developers, and it definitely never had any developer who really knows how to make a modern and appealing user interface. I mean, you've obviously never seen Friendica's user interface, but let me tell you that it's quite old-fashioned. It's just meant to do its job.

Hobbyist, spare-time developers of such an extremely niche piece of software who are not trained in Web UI design normally don't know a thing about accessibility. And truly, they don't care. If the UI covers all features, and the users don't have to SSH or telnet onto the Web server to use it, it's often good enough.

Friendica's regularly active user community has never been more than maybe a few thousand at a time, maybe even only a few hundred, as opposed to the over two million at which Mastodon has topped out. Thus, Friendica has never encountered blind or visually-impaired users yet.

You can see it all over the place. Alt-text is not part of Friendica's culture. Some Friendica veterans staunchly refuse to describe their media because they think alt-text is another Mastodon fad that Mastodon fundamentalists want to force upon the whole rest of the Fediverse with Mastodon's entire culture. Alt-text, to them, is like limiting your posts to 500 characters.

All this is why nobody has noticed yet that Friendica is not accessible at all.

I've got a suspicion that Friendica can only be made fully accessible by throwing the entire Web frontend away, developing an entirely new one from scratch and then also making all-new themes for it.

Also, it's only natural that TweeseCake doesn't support many of Friendica's features. As it looks to me, TweeseCake's Fediverse side is built against Mastodon and only Mastodon. If Mastodon doesn't have a feature, TweeseCake doesn't cover it either. Thus, TweeseCake probably only covers about 20% of Friendica's features because Mastodon doesn't have the other 80%.

#Long #LongPost #CWLong #CWLongPost #FediMeta #FediverseMeta #CWFediMeta #CWFediverseMeta #Friendica #TweeseCake #A11y #Accessibility
Jupiter Rowland@JustBob Discord has completely warped the term "server" for entire generations of Internet users. You are on Mastodon, created by @Eugen Rochko in 2016 as an alternative to Twitter that aimed to be as close to Twitter as possible.

The server that you're on, mastodon.social, is owned by Mastodon, Inc. and running on one or multiple rack servers in San Francisco, California, USA owned by Fastly.

I am on Hubzilla, created by @Mike Macgirvin 🖥️ in 2012 by forking his own Friendica from 2010, and currently mainly maintained by @Mario Vavti and @Harald Eilertsen. Hubzilla has got nothing to do with Mastodon whatsoever. It started out as an alternative to Facebook, but not a clone, rather better than Facebook, with full-blown long-form blogging capability and a built-in file storage, and it has been enhanced greatly in functionality even beyond that.

The server that I'm on, Netzgemeinde, is owned and developers, and running on a rack server in Nuremberg, Germany owned by Netcup.

And yet, you can see Jupiter Rowland@David Nason Pixelfed is wholly separate software from Mastodon on wholly separate servers with wholly separate owners. So yes, you need a separate Pixelfed account. It's a bit easier on Pixelfed if you're already on Mastodon: Pixelfed lets you automatically create a new user account by "logging in" with your Mastodon login credentials. But only Pixelfed has this as far as I know.

Loops is wholly separate again, but there's only one instance so far because it's too unfinished to even be open-source. So you'll need a Loops account next to your Mastodon account and your Pixelfed account.

Also, you'll have different followers on Mastodon, on Pixelfed and on Loops. But what you could do if you want your followers on Mastodon to see your Pixelfed posts is: Follow your own Pixelfed account from Mastodon. And then, whenever you post something interesting on Pixelfed, wait for it to arrive on your Mastodon timeline, and then boost it.

@Mark Stosberg There's one thing that exists already now: OpenWebAuth magic single sign-on. But it's only available on Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte and partially on Friendica.

What it does is recognise your login on another instance, even on an instance of another server application. Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte recognise logins from Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte, but Friendica can't recognise logins.

However, this is only used by the permissions system. For example, someone whom I'm connected to could have made their profile only visible to a certain subset of their connections, including myself. If you visit their profile, you won't see anything. If I visit their profile, their home instance recognises my Hubzilla login, and I can see the profile.

What it does not do is give you the same full-blown rights as a user with a local account. I can't just, like, go to some (streams) instance and post away as, what, jupiter_rowland@rumbly.net or go to a Hubzilla hub where I don't have an account and create a webpage or a wiki or a CalDAV calendar right away without logging in. That's not how it works.

By the way, client-side OpenWebAuth support (= your login is recognised on Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte) was proposed and actually developed to the point of a pull request for Mastodon. As far as I know, it was rejected. OpenWebAuth won't come to Mastodon.

CC: @FoolishOwl @Oblomov

#Long #LongPost #CWLong #CWLongPost #FediMeta #FediverseMeta #CWFediMeta #CWFediverseMeta #Fediverse #Mastodon #Pixelfed #Loops #Friendica #Hubzilla #Streams #(streams) #Forte #OpenWebAuth #SingleSignOn
Jupiter Rowland@Kem Herkes From a purely technical point of view, he'll only need a Pixelfed account. Jupiter Rowland@Eleanore Duncan That's kind of difficult, actually.

Technically speaking, there is Friendica which was created in 2010 as a Facebook alternative (better than Facebook rather than an outright Facebook clone), and there are Hubzilla and (streams), both descendants of Friendica created by Friendica's creator. They're quite powerful, (streams) more than Friendica and Hubzilla even more than (streams), and they've got everything you need for social networking.

I've made a series of tables that compare these three with one another and with Mastodon. You can find them here.

But if you say, "app," I suppose you mean, "dedicated native mobile phone app." This is the first hindrance. Native specialised phone apps are only available for Friendica and then only for Android and Sailfish OS. The only iOS Friendica app is a closed beta; it exists, but you have to join its beta test program instead of being able to load it from the App Store easy-peasy.

Technically, you can use Friendica with some apps made for Mastodon. But you'll only have those features that Mastodon has, too. You won't see threaded conversations. You won't have text formatting. You won't have groups. You won't be able to post pictures. You won't have any access to any configuration. And so forth. You'll only have the absolute, bare-bone basics.

Otherwise, and for Hubzilla and (streams) generally, there's no way around the Web interface (browser, PWA).

As for community building, Friendica, Hubzilla and (streams) not only support groups, but they have groups/forums, optionally even private ones. Organisational presentation is possible, too. All three have blogging-level support of text formatting in their posts all the way to embedding an unlimited number of images right in the middle of a post. So a group could make an introduction post with headlines and bullet-point lists and tables and pictures and all the shebang and pin it at the top for all (permitted) visitors to see. Hubzilla even supports simple webpages which could be used for presentation. Hubzilla's own website is a webpage on a Hubzilla channel.

"Easy and clear," that's the issue here. Friendica has quite a bit of a learning curve. (streams) has an even steeper learning curve. Hubzilla has the steepest learning curve of all three. None of them has the UI/UX of something created by a Silicon Valley start-up from $50,000,000 of venture capital.

Ironically, Hubzilla is the one with the best user documentation. But what I mean is not the user documentation built into the hubs, but its complete re-write by a user that's intended to be built into Hubzilla itself one day and replace the old documentation. If you want to peruse it, you'll have to be told by an experience Hubzilla user that it exists, and where you can find it. Still, Hubzilla is highly complex with quite a bit of pitfalls and the worst UX of the three.

Friendica has a wiki, but it mostly covers how-tos for certain things instead of being a full-blown user manual.

(streams)' built-in help system is gradually being rebuilt from zero, but in the style of a technical specification again. And it's very incomplete.

Still, you will need some kind of documentation to get started with all three, ideally plus how-tos for Facebook refugees on how to get started and then do Facebook things. You can't use on either of the three what you've learned from Facebook. They do have everything you need as a Facebook refugee, but it looks different, it feels different, it works differently.

For example, if you're on either of the three, and you're looking for the place where you can create a new group/forum, you can look forever in vain. Unlike on Facebook, groups/forums are not an additional feature of their own. They're accounts (Friendica)/channels (Hubzilla, (streams)) like your user account/channel, but with special settings. This alone makes many Facebook users scream out that this feature is completely unuseable, simply because it isn't what they expect it to be.

In addition, if you run a Friendica group on the same node as your personal account, you have to log out and back in again to administer or moderate the group and to get gack to your account. But nobody tells you to have your group on another node than your personal account.

On Hubzilla and (streams), it's the opposite: It's better to not only have a group or forum on the same instance as your personal channel, but on the same account. You can have multiple channels, multiple fully separate identities on the same account because your identity is fully detached from your account. If you have your personal channel and your forum channel on the same account, you can jump back and forth between the two. But this is something that practically doesn't exist outside of Hubzilla and (streams), and so, nobody will tell you about this feature.

Even if you can wrap your mind around all this, you still aren't over the hump. Especially not on Hubzilla and (streams). On Hubzilla, you can have a restricted or private group/forum. But you have to dive into the permission settings of your forum channel, a place where you're being warned that you have to act carefully, and set the corresponding permissions accordingly by hand. On (streams), there's less to configure and no warning; instead, there are not one, but four types of forums. But neither the Web interface nor the documentation tells you what's what, and what does what.

Another idea, but much less like Facebook, would be Mbin. Technically, Mbin is an alternative to Reddit and Hacker News and kind of feels like Reddit, UI-wise. But it also offers personal microblogging instead of being limited to only group discussions, and it's much more compatible with the rest of the Fediverse.

There are two caveats again. One, most Mbin users are former Redditors. This means that Mbin's culture = Reddit's culture, including, but not limited to dank maymays, shitposts all over the place and potentially also power-tripping mods (if you want to join existing Mbin magazines (= subreddits) rather than starting new ones). @Carl Myrland The closest there is would be the Threadiverse: Lemmy, Mbin, PieFed. Technically all Reddit replacements. The latter two are probably even more appropriate because they've got somewhat better support for Fediverse software that isn't a Reddit clone.

You can join a Lemmy community, an Mbin magazine or a PieFed community with a Mastodon account by following it. Starting new threads is not "Mastodon 101" straight-forward because you have to take a few things into consideration (Mastodon has no real support for groups, that's why), but it's possible. And if you go over to Lemmy or Mbin or PieFed, all you see is groups, only groups and nothing but groups.

What you cannot do, however, is log onto a Lemmy, Mbin or PieFed instance with your Mastodon account and get your own personal, customisable feed. This is generally not how the Fediverse works. The only non-Mastodon place where you can "log in" with your Mastodon credentials and have a local user account automagically created with the self-same login credentials is Pixelfed.

Also, especially Lemmy is populated by 99% former Redditors. They haven't adopted Mastodon's culture just because they're in the Fediverse. Most of them barely know that Mastodon exists. Instead, Lemmy has Reddit's culture all over. Prepare for culture clashes with Mastodon users on the losing side because all mods are formerly from Reddit, too.

@Carl Myrland No need to create them. The Fediverse has multiple all-out, full-blown Facebook alternatives readily available already now. Not Facebook clones, but better than Facebook with features that you won't find on Facebook.

And yes, including groups on various levels of public vs private where public groups are open to the whole Fediverse including Mastodon.

And if you're daring enough to try something experimental:
  • Forte (code repository)
    Established in 2024
Federated with Mastodon since its own creation

All four were created by the same guy, @Mike Macgirvin 🖥️, professional software developer of about half a century, creator of multiple Fediverse protocols and almost a dozen Facebook alternatives in the Fediverse and inventor of nomadic identity.
