The relationship between the university and #cambridge is both important and not particularly well known. Historically the #university blocked any development in the town that might affect its monopsony of manual labour - which maintained a high employment low wage economy there well into the later half of last century. Only in recent decades has this approach changed. However the legacy remains significant.

@msbellows Ah, there's always the Sinclair school of production engineering. Most people who build electronics will:

1. build a prototype
2. take components out until it stops working (y'know, little capacitors, that sort of thing)
3. put the last one back in so that it starts working again
4. manufacture and ship it.

It was widely rumoured in #Cambridge in the 1980s that Sinclair omitted stage 3.
