Just finished the book Meta doesn't want you to read: CARELESS PEOPLE by Sarah Wynn-WIlliams. I don't normally read tell all books but this one is worth a read. You can get through it quickly as it isn't a difficult read. But if you have friends and/or family that use Facebook and they are still capable of any kind of critical thought you should buy them a copy of the book. It's chilling.

I won't highlight any particular anecdotes from it and urge you to read it for yourself, but I will share this one sentence:

"Facebook does work for a beauty product company tracking when thirteen-to-seventeen-year-old girls delete selfies, so it can serve a beauty ad to them at that moment."

Despicable. Utterly despicable.

And then there's what they did in Myanmar. Or didn't do.

"We need to talk about Sheryl Sandberg" edition.

I'm surprised that the most talked about anecdote about Sandberg is that she pressured her female colleagues to share her bed on a private jet.

Want REAL tea?

Sandberg forced her female subordinates to do free labor to promote her book Lean In.

When the Women's March occurred in January 2017, Sandberg would not hear about it and refused to discuss it.

Am I supposed to add "allegedly"? Ok, allegedly. I believe it.

Does anyone seriously think that Meta execs don’t understand the Streisand effect?

Did Meta lawyers really not read the arbitration agreement and understand that it doesn’t apply to the publisher?

#CarelessPeople is a best-seller because Meta decision-makers want it to be a best-seller.

#CarelessPeople, which my local system (Minuteman) has 8 copies, and now 594 people on the wait list. 72 copies on order.)

Hey, #bookstodon, I'm going to buy a physical book thats in high demand.

If I read it, and then donate it to my local #library, what are the odds that it goes into circulation, rather than, say, held for the next book sale?

My “not a book review” of Careless People – the book Facebook doesn’t want you to read.

With highlights on Ireland’s complicity and the lengths people farmers (as I call them) will go to to appease authoritarian regimes like China.

It’s clear from this that Ireland should be stripped of the authority to enforce GDPR and, really, people farmers – and the business model of people farming in general – should be banned in the EU.

(Don’t hold your breaths.)

'Careless People has debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list. It’s also spent much of the week in the number three position on Amazon’s bestseller list. That’s despite the fact that Sarah Wynn-Williams, a former policy director at Facebook, has been barred from promoting or publicly discussing the book following legal action by Meta.'

You have to love the savage efficiency of the Streisand effect: Sarah Wynn-Williams' Facebook exposé #CarelessPeople skyrocketed to the top of the NYTimes Bestseller List on its debut week. It's the second most purchased book on Amazon (US) as well.

I'm about halfway through the book and I wish I could be in a book club to discuss it. The anecdotes about Facebook's top leaders and their ineptitude / selfishness are so delicious. Fair and fierce attacks, in beautiful prose.
