**Known unknowns in the North. Uncertain maps of the Arctic in early modern times**
“_By zooming in on world maps and North Pole maps from the sixteenth and the seventeenth centuries and examining them in a long-term chronological sequence, we can follow lines and lands that appear and disappear and trace the winding paths of mapping processes and practices through the centuries._”

Hand-drawing a #ttrpg #battlemap every day until I get better! Day 44:
#Cartography is a Python tool that consolidates infrastructure assets and the relationships between them in an intuitive graph view powered by a Neo4j database.
The finished, updated and extended land of Nicea. The new sections are to the far west and east. Seeing the ocean on both sides frames the continent and improves the map more than I would have guessed. The real delight of this map is how well loved the world is by the family that runs their dnd game there, I try to add details from the games and honour the representation of a very special fantasy realm. #dndmap #cartography #rpg #dnd #maps

I am toying with the idea to build a (physical) globe myself. Preferably using #QGIS and maybe Inkscape for final touches (or other OS tools).
I would like to design the globe as far as possible in QGIS and then use an appropriate projection to output the lobes. Then glue to a sphere using wallpaper glue etc. - I imagine it difficult to get the labels right.
Surprisingly, I can find few resources on how to approach such a project.
Any pointers or own experience?

Stamen recently collaborated with the Science Museum to develop an interactive exhibit about The Congruence Engine, a 3-year research effort to digitally connect industrial heritage collections across the UK. Read more about our collaboration, focused on the industrial city of Bradford, on our blog.
Some years ago, I saw a site on which you can switch between different map projections and select any point on the Earth as the center point.
It was really cool, but I've never been able to find it again.
I love LA, so spare the bullshit celebrations of its demise.

I just had an email from Gabe Moss at the Ancient World Mapping Center at UNC Chapel Hill alerting me to "the release of Livy Study Maps: Book 22, the latest addition to the Maps for Texts series."
More here: https://awmc.unc.edu/2025/03/20/livy-study-maps-book-22/
"... this set of twenty-three maps is designed for students and teachers working with Livy’s text, and offers detailed coverage of famous episodes such as the Battles of Lake Trasimene and Cannae, as well as of lesser-known campaigns from Book 22 of the History of Rome. The maps are available as free digital downloads under the CC-BY-NC 4.0 license."
