Ned Yeung
"The order would have made it significantly harder to register to vote, even for eligible voters. Nearly 10% of eligible voters lack easy access to documents, such as a US passport or birth certificate, that would be required to prove their citizenship, a 2024 survey found."

I'm living this struggle in Canada. Conservatives and Republicans both are constantly engaging in voter suppression and erosion of constitutional rights. If Poilievre won an election here, he could try to implement such plans which are very much in line with Harper's Islamophobic "security" plans and Poilievre's promise to override charter rights to be "tough on crime", and he would then make it harder for people like me to vote against him in the next election.

But an elected official is not allowed to change a democratic election system at will, just because they were elected by it.

“Our Constitution entrusts Congress and the States – not the President – with the authority to regulate federal elections,” US district judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly wrote in a 120-page opinion. “No statutory delegation of authority to the Executive Branch permits the President to short-circuit Congress’s deliberative process by executive order.”

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/apr/24/trump-proof-citizenship-vote-blocked

#cdnpoli #uspol #abpoli
