Greenseer (Dionne) 🩷🐇🏳️‍⚧️
So this was how it all began. Simply by telling you that the next post, part 2, the main purpose of this toot and with the three most shocking photos, will be placed behind a CW, you can probably already guess that this cockerel was a very very naughty boy

When I encountered him, along with a small brood of hens and another cockerel, I had only just finished my peaceful lunch (involving drumsticks.. yes, I know!) by an idyllic and peaceful mountain stream 😉🐔 #cockerels #chickensofmastodon (1/2)

Ari Gardens as a Verb
Welcoming Cinnamon Sugar back home today. 🥰🐓

She is one of the babies that my youngest hen hatched from "borrowed"* eggs last year.

She's been up at the farm since early August 2024. Since the farmer doesn't want to keep her because she doesn't prefer breeding hens with her feather colors, we got her back!

She is another light blue egg layer. Can't wait to integrate her into the flock in a couple of weeks. Right now she's in isolation, and I'm planning to work with her on taming her down a little bit. She's very wild.

She got her primaries clipped today and only screamed a little bit bc we were inside and the cat was curious about her. She screamed a lot at my dogs when we were outside. Poor thing.

Chickens are very unwelcoming to new flock members. I'm not sure her adopted mom will remember her? But we'll just take it day by day at this point. I'll make sure that everyone's well before I move her containment into the main run. It's a process!

* I say "borrowed" because we don't have a rooster, so no fertile eggs. We hatch out a dozen or more hatching eggs from my farmer friend's flock every year, depending on how many of my girls go broody. Then, most of those chickens go back to the farmer or they go to people who want chicks.

I'm already starting to encourage my girls to consider sitting. I put wooden eggs in the nest box last week and somebody has been moving them around! So, signs are good that I will have somebody who wants to sit fairly soon. Demand for chicks is really high this year.

I know, I should've named her Nicole.

#FediverseChook #ChickensOfTheFediverse
#ChickensOfMastodon

Ari Gardens as a Verb
This never gets old! Maybe it's just my autism, but every single egg my girls produce is a little bit of joy in my life. I marvel at them, and I thank them for every single one.

Even though I do have four green egg layers, I can still tell which one laid which egg. That's how deeply I know my flock.

Though I'm gonna have to figure out these calcium spots. They're intermittent. It is just the start of the season, and once she gets into a rhythm, and we get into fresh greens season, the problem usually goes away.

I don't love the food that I'm feeding them, so I may need to supplement more. We're not quite to the season where I can bring home weed greens from one of the gardens I work at.

This girl will be 3 this year and yet she is still one of my most reliable layers!

None of the other three-year-olds have started laying yet, and the four-year-old blue-egg-layer hasn't either.

The two-year-olds raised by this peach-egg-laying three-year-old both have, so I've got three hens laying right now. Woot!

I cannot tell you how much it actually costs us to produce an egg. I purposefully took it on as a hobby, not as a job, so I don't track costs of inputs vs outputs.

Honestly, in the four years that I've been doing this, it's probably cost me at least a dollar per egg if not more. (Which is the current price of "cheap" eggs, someone else told me?!)

It's entirely possible that from the next hatch that we brood, I will keep two hens to refresh my flock. If somebody wants to rat me out for having more birds than the city allows, I'd like to see them try.

There are people like that living in this neighborhood now, though. They live to criticize and tear down people like me who prefer to have native plants in their yards rather than a colonialist lawn. Thus me calling someone a troll and telling them to move to West Lawrence on Facebook yesterday.

That was my swan (chicken?) song there!

#ChickensOfMastodon

Jill Veldhuis 💾
Buffy has never been a particularly friendly chicken, and after being left to free range for the last year she's practically feral. I'd like to try to acclimate her to human company, but simply being in the coop with her is clearly driving her to near panic.

:VictorSob:

⬇️ play with sound on if you want to hear a chicken going 'buk buk buk buk buk buk buk' for 15 seconds. :ChickenHead:

#chickens #chickensofmastodon

Kit Muse
Teenage chickens.... I mean it's been a rough year with this year's pullets (of which 4-5 turned out to be roosters), but I'm guessing the walnut tree growing through the coop tore the netting enough that this easter egger young hen and a friend could pop through. We'll see if they make it back into the coop.

But seriously, this is not helpful. Good thing everyone else appears to be staying put, and there's always next year.

#chickensofMastodon #ChickenDaddy #Chickens #ButtNuggets

Yudderick & Co.
I find myself unfortunately in need of help finding a home for my flock of chickens. I'm moving from a small rural farm to a house in the city, and the arrangements I had previously made for the birds have fallen though.

The chickens are in the US in Virginia, and so I'm looking for anyone in any nearby state (including West Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Delaware, or even Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky) who could take them in. Basically anywhere I can reasonably drive them.

There are nine hens and a rooster, and they are all 8-11 years old, well past prime laying age. They need a place where they can live out their lives in safety and comfort. One of the hens is blind but has been blind for many years now and is fine as long as she has a roost bar to perch on with nearby food and water.

I am absolutely willing to pay for their feed and care, and I could even pay for and/or personally construct a coop/run for them to live in.

I've tried contacting nearby rescue organizations but the only one who is even accepting chickens has room for just a few of the hens. If you can help please email me at: chicken (at) npgr.com

(Boosts appreciated)

#Chickens #Poultry #ChickensOfMastodon #BackyardChickens

Kit Muse
I heard the voice-cracking attempting to crow sounds that tells me one of the 17 chicks I got from the feed store is NOT a pullet, but a rooster. At this point my rooster-hen ratio is way to low anyway so adding one more with (hopefully) 16 hens is no big deal. It'd be nice if it was one of my naked neck/turken chicks because I have a bunch of easter egger roos, and that'd give me more options (I want to breed naked neck easter eggers). We shall see. #chickens #chickensofMastodon
