They began after the coup d’état in Ukraine in 2014, which was supported by Western countries. And after that, hostilities actually began in south-eastern Ukraine. (…) This forced us to make an attempt to stop the war that was started in 2014 by armed means. This is when the actual war and killing started, and the Russian commander of that group Igor Girkin was frequently boasting about it in public.[^3] Today Putin only kind of admitted that it was not any “self-defense” forces, but Russian army that actually participated in the war.
