I noticed the warning my router gave & the gateway going red and dead. No calls were possible, since the GSM networks also died for me.

How? FTTC we have FTTC small expensive boxes (1.30m 40cm 1.20m) besides the streets. Mine dropped itself hard along with wireless servers in my area. Why? Neglected maintanance. Result catastropic drop of ALL services for 2+hours!

I went into comms survival mode (with my tranceivers) Those were fine of course. Why is there no second route to the servers when my main FTTC box fails? Greed & logistics.

The ISP never told me what happened. A friend inside gave me some data. As a monopolist th ISP has too much technical power over us. Stefano Marinelli
While waiting for FTTH, I’m preparing my network to welcome it.

* I replaced the fan in the Mikrotik CRS310-8G+2S+IN with a Noctua, because it was really annoying. In my opinion, it will probably turn off completely during the winter.

* I reorganized the channels and bands of the access points. I set the one in my studio (Omada AX5400) to 160MHz, lowering the power to the minimum: I only need these speeds in the studio, and I can take advantage of them either by wiring up (like I did with my Mac) or via wifi. In the rest of the house, I can comfortably use 40 MHz at low power and 2.4 GHz for older devices, IoT, or the more remote spots.

Last night, using higher channels, I was reaching even higher speeds (around 1800), but then DFS kicks in and pushes everything back to channel 36…

I ran an OpenSpeedTest by setting the server on my Mac (connected via cable at 2.5 Gbit/sec) and via web from my Samsung S24 Ultra over wifi.

I’d say I can’t complain. 5 years ago I had a 20/2 Mbit/sec connection and I still can't believe that a 2.5Gbit/500 will be here...

#IT #Connection #FTTH #HomeLab

Stefano Marinelli
Great news! I’ve been contacted for a site check, and it’s confirmed that my house can be activated for FTTH - up to 2.5 Gbps download and 500 Mbps upload speeds. The local technicians have been alerted and will reach out once they're ready. However, with "Ferragosto" coming up, things might be slow, so I’m not expecting anything immediate - but you never know!

Here’s the network setup I’m planning:

* I’m getting an Mikrotik RB5009 (currently, I'm using a 4011) router, which has a 2.5 Gbps port that will connect directly to the ONT.
* I’ll use the RB5009’s SFP+ port to extend the network to the upper floor via the optical fiber I installed during the 2020 lockdown. I have a fanless Mikrotik CRS326-24G-2S+RM switch with two SFP+ ports up there (keeping it fanless if possible).
* The RB5009’s 1 Gbps ports will be sufficient for my needs, connecting to an access point (limited to 1 Gbps) and the Qotom. I might set up LACP to the Qotom (powered by FreeBSD) since it has multiple 1 Gbps ports.
* On the upper floor, the CRS326 will receive the 10 Gbps fiber via SFP+, with the other SFP+ connected to a media converter received today. This will route through a 15-meter Cat7 cable (which arrived yesterday) to my desk, enabling my computer to connect at 2.5 Gbps - or I might add another switch on my desk if needed.
The access point in my studio (a TP-Link Omada AX5400) supports 2.5 Gbps Ethernet, but for now, I’ll connect it via a 1 Gbps port.

Even though my current 200 Mbps is quite sufficient for my needs, upgrading to 1 Gbps per port is a significant improvement. I’m particularly excited about the 500 Mbps uplink and the native /48 IPv6 network - no more relying on the HE tunnel broker to Switzerland 😊.

#Networking #IT #FTTH
