But I'm thrilled. Everything is running. Unlike <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/eOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#eOS</a> I have Android 15 and <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/seedvault" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#seedvault</a> is running. I had to set up a <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/ntfy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ntfy</a> server (hello <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/uberspace" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#uberspace</a>) so <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/moshidon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#moshidon</a> (<a href="https://chaos.social/tags/fdroid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#fdroid</a>) pushes, but that's not bad. I know there are even freer <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/androids" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#androids</a> out there, but for me it's a mix of privacy, simplicity and a whole lot of good feeling. Ramin HonaryJust got my <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/fairphone5" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Fairphone5</a> The last time I bought a <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/smartphone" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#SmartPhone</a> was almost 8 years ago, and the <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/tech" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#tech</a> has improved quite a lot in that time. As for the <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/fairphone" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Fairphone</a> 5 itself:<ul><li>Touch screen is high-def, very responsive, and much, much easier to use with screen keyboards than my older smartphone. I can see myself actually writing code on this, something I have never even considered trying to do on a touch screen before.</li><li>Build quality is much, much nicer than it looks in pictures, to me it feels as nice as an iPhone.</li><li>It is a bit heavy, but not much worse than my previous phone, and has a larger screen.</li><li>Fairly easy to <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/degoogle" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#DeGoogle</a> — I just decline all prompts for Google log-ins, and install <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/fdroid" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FDroid</a> apps to replace the default Google apps.</li><li>Boot loader can be unlocked, and I will probably install <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/lineageos" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#LineageOS</a> , but the default Android 13 install is already quite good, and I might try updating to Android 14 first.</li><li>Linus Tech Tips was not lying about the notification settings being too damn loud.</li></ul>After using my old phone for 8 years, I am surprised how fast this phone is now. Everything about it just works better. I suppose this would have been true for just about any phone I could buy, but I can’t see myself wanting for better tech specs. I really hope this one lasts me 10 years or more, I bought it specifically because it is the most repairable phone I was able to find anywhere.First impression after using it for a day: I could not be more pleased, it has exceeded all of my expectations, 10/10 would recommend.
