Ciarán Ferrie<p>Yet another development in Galway that is being blocked by the persistent belief that the Galway City Ring Road is ever going to happen. The City and County Councils need to accept reality here and start to plan for a city where the majority of people get around by public transport and active travel. </p><p>And we need to see the publication of the long overdue Galway Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy (GMATS) to move towards a more resilient city plan.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/Galway" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Galway</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/GCRR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GCRR</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://www.galwaybayfm.ie/galway-city/plans-for-150-new-homes-in-knockancarra-refused-due-to-conflict-with-galway-ring-road-187424" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">galwaybayfm.ie/galway-city/pla</span><span class="invisible">ns-for-150-new-homes-in-knockancarra-refused-due-to-conflict-with-galway-ring-road-187424</span></a></p>
Ciarán Ferrie<p>Ex-PD Councillor Declan McDonnell says that the Galway City Ring Road is "20% of the solution, it’s not the total solution, but it’s part of it".</p><p>So if we're spending €1bn on the ring road does that mean we get to spend €4bn on public transport and active travel?</p><p><a href="https://www.independent.ie/regionals/galway/news/frustration-in-galway-as-n6-ring-road-reassessment-will-not-start-until-2025/a1027038132.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">independent.ie/regionals/galwa</span><span class="invisible">y/news/frustration-in-galway-as-n6-ring-road-reassessment-will-not-start-until-2025/a1027038132.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/Galway" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Galway</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/GCRR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GCRR</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/SustainableTransport" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SustainableTransport</span></a></p>

Ciarán Ferrie<p>The cynicism of this is breathtaking. Galway Chamber are using the Galway Charter, a plan for the sustainable development of the city, to justify the development of the ring road, despite there being no mention of the ring road in the Charter. </p><p>They even have the gall to reference Freiburg as a precedent.</p><p><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7129463805226430464/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:l</span><span class="invisible">i:activity:7129463805226430464/</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/GCRR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GCRR</span></a></p>

Ciarán Ferrie<p>Well would you look at that, 8.30am on a Tuesday morning and there is no traffic congestion in Galway city.</p><p>The only difference this morning being that the schools are on mid-term break. We could spend a billion euro on a new Ring Road or we could spend a fraction of that on making it safe for children to cycle to school and on providing school transport with much better results.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/Galway" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Galway</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/GCRR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GCRR</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/SustainableTransport" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SustainableTransport</span></a></p>
Ciarán Ferrie<p>Four years ago, I attended a meeting of the Oireachtas Climate Action Committee, then chaired by Hildegarde Naughton. The Committee heard about the potential, and the necessity, for a switch to <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/SustainableTransport" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SustainableTransport</span></a> modes.</p><p>I corresponded with Deputy Naughton afterwards, pointing out that the <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/Galway" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Galway</span></a> City Ring Road would increase CO2 emissons by 37%, reduce cycling mode share and increase car mode share.</p><p>That she still supports the road is unconscionable. <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/GCRR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GCRR</span></a></p><p><a href="https://galwaybayfm.ie/galway-bay-fm-news-desk/hildegarde-naughton-says-ring-road-most-common-issue-raised-by-public/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">galwaybayfm.ie/galway-bay-fm-n</span><span class="invisible">ews-desk/hildegarde-naughton-says-ring-road-most-common-issue-raised-by-public/</span></a></p>

Ciarán Ferrie<p>The Taoiseach again in the Dáil yesterday reaffirming his support for the Galway City Ring Road, he now claims that it will not "necessarily be bad in terms of the climate" despite the applicants' own documentation stating expressly that it will increase CO2 emissions by 37%.</p><p>Every expert in the field tells us that the transition to electric cars won't be enough on its own to meet climate targets and that the transition won't happen fast enough.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/GCRR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GCRR</span></a></p><p><a href="https://www.kildarestreet.com/debates/?id=2023-02-08a.45#g69" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">kildarestreet.com/debates/?id=</span><span class="invisible">2023-02-08a.45#g69</span></a></p>
Ciarán Ferrie<p>The Tánaiste, in response, notes that the current congestion and volume of cars is "contributing negatively to climate change targets" but thinks that a road which will increase the volume of cars and the CO2 emissions is "essential in terms of the growth and development of Galway city"</p><p>It is clear that neither Fianna Fáil nor Fine Gael are serious about climate action.</p><p>The Climate Action Plan is not just a report that can be quietly shelved - it is the law.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/ClimateEmergency" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateEmergency</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/GCRR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GCRR</span></a></p>
Ciarán Ferrie<p>Sean Canney TD gives an excellent summary of the damage that is being done by the uncertainty surrounding the Galway City Ring Road and the frustration at the lack of progress in developing the public transport network.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/GCRR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GCRR</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://www.kildarestreet.com/debates/?id=2023-02-02a.293#g367" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">kildarestreet.com/debates/?id=</span><span class="invisible">2023-02-02a.293#g367</span></a></p>
Ciarán Ferrie<p>And to make matters worse, the Taoiseach has reaffirmed his support for the Galway City Ring Road, a project that will perpetuate car-dependency, increase car volumes, and increase CO2 emissions. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/GCRR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GCRR</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/Galway" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Galway</span></a></p><p><a href="https://www.kildarestreet.com/debates/?id=2023-01-31a.32#g85" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">kildarestreet.com/debates/?id=</span><span class="invisible">2023-01-31a.32#g85</span></a></p>
Ciarán Ferrie<p>Hildegarde Naughton, her party, and her government have voted for a Climate Action Plan that creates a legal requirement for a 51% reduction in transport emissions in the next 7 years. </p><p>She has known for at least three and a half years that the Galway City Ring Road would result in an increase in CO2 emissions and an increase in the number of cars on Galway's roads but still she continues to support spending €1bn of public funds on this boondoggle.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/GCRR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GCRR</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/Galway" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Galway</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/ClimateEmergency" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateEmergency</span></a></p>
