Mx Amber Alex (she/it)
And as far as I can tell, all of those speak to suit trends from the time they were presumably developed, or a few years ago (I figure most video game developers are some years behind on fashion, they, like most people these days, probably buy a suit once a decade when they have a friend's wedding or the likes coming up, and then wear it for the next decade).

1998's Gman wears suits reminiscient of the 80s: low button stance, slimmer lapels (though his are extreme) to set themselves apart from the airline wing excesses of the 70s, strong shoulder padding popular with Wall Street executives, etc.

2004's Gman wears a suit that's very balanced and timeless, for the most part, as interest in "timeless" and "classic" proportions spiked again during the 90s, recalling cuts from the 1920s with their less skinny sizings and fairly moderate proportions.

2020s Gman wears the slim fit trend of the mid-2010s, with suits that are often cut to the effect of being an entire size or two too small around the waist, which leads to the visible pulling around the waist and gaping opening at the chest, with overly skinny trousers to match, and the popularly short shirt collars of that decade.

It's all very interesting.

#hl2 #halflife #HalfLifeAlyx #Gman

Mx Amber Alex (she/it)
Which isn't to say the 1998 Gman does everything right, on the contrary, the cut of his suit is just awful. Ridiculously narrow lapels like the world hasn't seen since the 60s, a gorge so low the late 80s would be embarrassed to be seen with it, a button stance so low the waist button is basically on his hips, overly-padded shoulders, and a coat that's way too short.

The 2004 version does most things right, buttons aside: the lapels are still a bit narrow, but the buttons are fairly well-proportioned (maybe spaced a wee bit too far), the pocket flaps sit a little under the waist, the shirt collar is an unassuming point collar, and the coat seems long enough to cover his buttocks. The body is cut fairly straight with the waist only gently suppressed, less so than in 1998, in a cut that might appear unmodern today, but is also fairly conservative, which fits the man. The pants have little break, maybe a quarter break, and are fairly straight and only slightly tapered.

The 2020 version though... oh dear. The coat has shortened enough to definitely not cover crotch nor buttocks sufficiently anymore, the shoulders are visibly over-padded again, so much so that the sleeve head folds around the shoulder pads, and the coat is cut way too skinny, as it noticably pulls open at the chest. The hip pockets sit too high imo, the top of the flaps should meet the lowest button, but instead the bottom of the flaps meets it. The pants are too long now, approaching a full break, something so conservative it's nearly died out today, and result in a crumpled leg halfway up his shin. Furthermore, the shirt is dreary, with an overly wide knot (windsor or half-windsor) overwhelming a garish, modern collar with points so short, they barely surround the knot anymore. In addition, the navy and air force blue of his earlier suits has given way to a decidedly un-business, fashion-forward more saturated blue, almost a french blue, that, together with the prominent purple tie, robs him of any conservative or business-like appearance. 2004's tie was purple too, but darker and less prominent against his more gray-blue suit.

#hl2 #halflife #HalfLifeAlyx #Gman
