I had a bank of 32 of 'em back in the 90's when I was the sysop of the Microsoft Canada BBS (I was unfortunately the last sysop as we replaced the BBS with FTP servers under my watch).</p><p><a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/Hayes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Hayes</span></a> <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/HayesSmartModem" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HayesSmartModem</span></a> <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/RetroComputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RetroComputing</span></a> <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/BBS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BBS</span></a> <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/Microsoft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Microsoft</span></a> <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/TheGoodOldDays" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TheGoodOldDays</span></a></p>
Saustrup<p>I'm looking to build a <a href="https://mstdn.dk/tags/zimodem" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zimodem</span></a> or something similar using an <a href="https://mstdn.dk/tags/ESP8266" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ESP8266</span></a> or <a href="https://mstdn.dk/tags/ESP32" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ESP32</span></a> for some throwback <a href="https://mstdn.dk/tags/BBS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BBS</span></a> 'ing or perhaps connecting to a Linux system. For this, I was hoping that it would be easy to find an old dead <a href="https://mstdn.dk/tags/Hayes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Hayes</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.dk/tags/SmartModem" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SmartModem</span></a> or something similar in solid, preferably metal box - but we're apparently not that sentimental and a little too efficient at recycling stuff in these parts 😢 </p><p>For those digging the idea, and wanting to go ALL in, there's the Noisy Zimodem. Someone took the time to combine a Zimodem and a DAC for producing authentic modem sounds. If that doesn't take you back to the awesome <a href="https://mstdn.dk/tags/90s" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>90s</span></a>, I don't know what will.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRC4mkl1oA8" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=VRC4mkl1oA</span><span class="invisible">8</span></a></p>

Jeffrey Goldberg<p>Among the presidential streets of <a href="https://ioc.exchange/tags/Chicago" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Chicago</span></a>, there is a tiny one called <a href="https://ioc.exchange/tags/Tilden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Tilden</span></a> Street. There is no <a href="https://ioc.exchange/tags/Hayes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Hayes</span></a> Street among them. I really hope there is a great story about this. Anyone know the relevant bits of Chicago <a href="https://ioc.exchange/tags/history" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>history</span></a> behind this? #1876</p><p>I can guess, but I’m hoping for a story.</p>
