Water-not-fall

When the wind whips the waters, Bjarnarfoss dances to its tune.

#Iceland is known for strong winds, particularly south-facing coasts. Snæfellsnes¹ is a promontory jutting from the west of the country, both its northern and southerly aspects are coastal and exposed.

These 3 shots were taken in July, September and November. Bjarnafoss is a tiered plunge falls of 2 drops, with a total height of 79m/260ft.

Bottom trawling in European waters costs society up to €11bn a year, new study finds.

A first-of-its-kind study released today found that this cost is largely due to carbon dioxide emissions from disturbed sediments on the seafloor.

The study is the first to measure the full economic cost of bottom trawling in European waters - including the EU, UK, Norway and Iceland.

Snow Eggs

A beautiful day in Höfn, and the sunlight casts shadows across the mountain faces.

And the title? Our little joke. The first time we saw the white plastic-wrapped bales of winter fodder, we decided that they must be snow waiting to hatch!

Háitindur¹ (892 m/2926 ft) and Skálatindur (532 m/1745 ft) in Hornafjörður, south-eastern #Iceland. The little waterfall is Bergárfoss, also known as Mígandisfoss.

Humpbacks

Whale-watching in Skjálfandi¹ bay, north-eastern #Iceland, in November.

Over about 2 hours we saw at least 4 individuals, we could tell this by the patterns on the fluke.
They were relaxed, and were feeding around the boat quite happily. No hunting takes place in this area.
The vessel was one of a fleet of 1970s oak fishing boats which have been lovingly restored. One ship has an electric motor for silent sailing.
