I loved these llamas peacefully grazing among the ruins of Pumapungo ("the door of the puma" in Quechua), a city laid by the Incas centuries ago. This place, that was compared to the empire capital, Cusco, was the northern border of the Inca territory. It is in current day Cuenca, Ecuador.

In the Central Peruvian Sierra, one ritual has been performed since the 16th century. The "Dance of the Conquest" mixes together masses, processions, banquets, dances through the community, at the intersection of religion and politics.

Combining ethnography and history, Isabel Yaya McKenzie offers, in this layered article, a fascinating reflection on #longuedurée, #memory, and lived temporalities.

Happy #footpathFriday! This one's special, it's another photo taken in Machu Picchu, on the ancient Inca steps leading up to Huayna Picchu! Watching my friend hike these centuries-old stairs really puts things in perspective. It's a time machine carved in stone!

Stepping into Machu Picchu hits different when you're right there in the terraces, not just viewing it from the classic postcard spot. From this angle, you really feel the depth of Inca engineering. In the background, Huayna Picchu is standing like a guardian.

Ancient Inca engineering at its finest: the agricultural terraces of Huchuy Qosqo (Kakya Qawani), like a giant stone staircase in the mountain. Each level required precise stonework. While terracing is common in the Sacred Valley, their scales and precisions remind us of the immense effort required to build them.

Pachakuteq was the 9th Inka of Tawantinsuyu (Inkan Empire), turning it from a kingdom to an Empire. He defeated the Chankas in 1438, saving the Inkas and making them the dominant Andean power. He made Quechua the state language, expanded the cult to the sun, and began the Inka's great expansion.

His son, the 10th Inka Tupac (Topa) Inca Yupanqui, expanded the Inka Empire down to Chile and up to Ecuador.

Whereas Waru Waru was developed for mountain #agriculture, the author Beatrice Salinetti seems to see an application for many arid regions on all continents.
