Today we are excited to announce #Jellyfin is pivoting away from new personal media streaming features and going all in with a new #AI #chatgpt program.

Introducing #JellyAI!

No longer will you need to discuss which Lord of the Rings edit is definitive with people. Chat with the JellyAI bot!

Stop telling your spouse 4 other movies that actor was in, tell it to the JellyAI bot and have it respond with wondered amazement at your movie knowledge instead of a sigh and a side eye.

Start playing Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead and JellyAI will popup on screen at random intervals to roast you for your movie choice.

In fact, point JellyAI to your movie library and have it roast your entire collection.

Purchase JellyAI today, and we'll throw in the #music component for free!

With the music component, JellyAI will listen to you sing along and point out every time you sing the wrong words.

It'll also tell you if the current band ever wore white belts in their band photos.

Buy today!

I’ve seen Mastodon, Pixelfed devs and admins have to repeatedly ask for help with the costs for creating and running things and getting grief when they do so. It’s a particular bugbear of mine, that people can’t undertstand someone, somewhere along the line is forking out money to support what they take for granted and for free! Whoever cracks micropayments for FOSS that are fast, safe and secure will change the Internet for us all. /end #Plex #Jellyfin

It’s been a journey with them but Plex is an intrinsic part of my set up. The company’s financial model was prob unsustainable especially with the low cost of a Lifetime Pass which I think cost me £79 back in the day. In the last year we saw layoffs and a strategic rethink after some missteps. It was at this time I set up Jellyfin as a just in case option. We have to figure out better ways to support software devs. It costs money to make things. Devs shouldn’t need to beg! /2 #Plex #Jellyfin

I say this as someone who has both #Plex and #Jellyfin set up on my server. I am beyond tired of the overreactions and at times childish bloviating to Plex changing their pricing and free offering this past week. I’ve used Plex for 12 years. It was free to download and install. Allowed me to watch my DVD/Blurays without having to swap out disks. Game changer. I then purchased a Plex Lifetime Pass to help support the software. They struggled at first with 4K but now very solid and reliable. /1

@lettosprey #Jellyfin is great, can highly recommend it. Setting it up is quite easy too - I just run the image in docker with some mounts and --network='host'. Works like a charm, had it for several years and never had an issue despite many updates.

Currently my situation is the opposite of yours, maybe #NextCloud is next... 😅

Right!

#JellyFin installed. Most of my media reorganised and indexed.

#Tailscale deleted. I can't be bothered running it 24/7 on my phone.

#Docker and #NGINX reverse proxy manager installed. Probably done that right. No idea if it'll survive a reboot.

#LetsEncrypt set up with Dynamic DNS. No SSL errors!

HD Streaming over 5G works - but will have to see how adaptive it is on shitty hotel WiFi.

Bit of a faff, but seems to be working. Next step is configuring a Fire Stick to work with it.

Dude, what the fuck is #Plex up to now?

- An increase in price for their monthly Plex Pass: doesn't matter to me, why would I pay for it in the first place, esp considering how people who do often complain that the things they're paying for don't always work.

- Removal of activation fee of their
#iOS and #Android apps on mobile (previously, already free elsewhere): good, reduces that slight friction for users from trying to using Plex.

- Remote playback on your own fuckin' server is no longer an option, without either a Plex Pass subscription or a (newly released) Remote Watch subscription: this... is stupid af.

All in all, we've been
pampered with Plex and its ease of use and beautiful UI for too long, it's about time we move (and improve) #FOSS alternatives like #Jellyfin instead.

All of this said: If you've been using #Plex for free up until now and still don't want to pay.... It's probably time to investigate #Jellyfin.

If you don't share your Plex with anyone, again, nothing really changes... Though it sounds like you may need to look into something like Tailscale when away from home, so Plex still sees itself as streaming "locally".

Can anybody recommend a set-top-box I can run a #Jellyfin client on?
Ideally it would start/boot up into a Jellyfin client.
Ideally it would support HDMI-CEC.
Ideally it would have enough grunt to be able to play direct rather than require the server to transcode.
Ideally it would have wired Ethernet.
It definitely must not be made by Apple.

What media server should I use?

All my DVD and CD rips are sat on a plain filesystem with an NFS share.

That's good enough for Kodi and VLC. But I keep seeing people talking about things like #Plex and #Jellyfin - so I'm looking at options.

Which should I go for? VOTE NOW!
