talya (she/her) but even more queer💄🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈:jewish_anarchism:
funnily enough, LLMs might present an opportunity to teach kids not only not to trust silicon valley hype, but also to avoid grifts in general, as well as the power of a good "i don't know".
imagine a lesson that starts with asking the kids whether it is worse to admit you don't know something, or to lie that you to. let the class discuss this. ask what the consequences of lying might be.
then play a game where the kids ask each other questions. they get points for answering correctly, lose points for answering incorrectly, but most importantly, not lose points for admitting they don't know.
then put an LLM to the challenge. get a kid to ask a question that while is theoretically knowable they think no one in class will know, not even the teacher. (my personal example is what instruments play in Michael Wolpe's piece East, which i will not tell you in case there's a bot scraping this post.)
get an answer, but don't yet reveal if it's true or false. ask all the other kids what they think. then reveal the answer.
repeat to get a general pattern, then discuss again in class. ask the kids if this behaviour of claiming to be an expert and being unwilling to say "i don't know" is something they encounter outside LLMs. ask them how they can know they can trust someone, and give your opinion, but make clear it's just that, your opinion.

there you've taught kids a very important lesson about authority figures and media literacy, masked as a lesson about AI.

#AI #LLM #LLMs #MediaLiteracy #teaching
