If you're thinking of starting a website, it would be best for you to pick a country level domain extension, as opposed to a word-based domain extension.

Corporations can be bought, sold, influenced, regulated, and shutdown, overnight. If avoiding Donald Trump's possible madness is your goal, you don't want to be back into a corner with Corporate America.

Many people, unfortunately, do not read legal documentation. It has become human nature to simply click "OK, I agree".

If more folks did read their terms of services, you would know word-based domain name extensions are not managed the same way as normal with the protection of ICANN.

As it stands now, if Donald Trump really lost his mind, he could shut down much of the Fediverse.

It's true that algorithmic feeds will work differently on the #Fediverse than they do on either #BlueSky or #X, but that doesn't mean they have to suck.

They can in fact be better.

Here's an example of how it can work (if done properly):

A common algorithm is to show popular posts you might have missed that are "near you".

Developers can explore 3 different concepts of "near you":

  • "Near You v1": Popular posts from people you follow directly. 0-steps removed.
  • "Near You v2": Popular posts from the set of people you follow plus some sample of the people followed by some of the people you follow (perhaps not all of them, that might be too much data to process for your server).
  • "Near You v3": Popular posts from the set of people you follow, plus some sample of posts from the relay(s) you follow.

Now the hard part on the #Fediverse is figuring out which posts are popular. After all, the fact that a post has been RT'd or Like'd is not broadcast to all servers. My understanding is that there are ideas for protocol adjustments for how to make "just enough" of this information available to servers without clogging the pipes or overloading servers.

In fact, all 3 "Near You"s can be algorithmic feeds that servers like #Pleroma, #Misskey, #Mitra, #Mastodon, and others offer to their users.

The mass culture on Mastodon is not the same as the mass culture on Lemmy.

The mass culture on Mastodon is not the same as the mass culture on Pixelfed.

The mass culture on Mastodon is not the same as the mass culture on Misskey.

The mass culture on Mastodon is not the same as the mass culture on Friendica.

If you have only been on Mastodon, then you may be unaware of these other cultures.

A reminder, the Fediverse cost money.

Yes, it is free for YOU to use, but your local administrator pays for domain registration, web hosting, storage space, CDN, and of course, bandwidth.

The busier and more active your Fedi site, the most it cost.

If you are able, consider reaching out to your admin, and asking how you can help. Even small contributions add up and make a difference.

Thinking of creating a Fedi site? 🤔

The domain extensions Dot Com, Net, Org, Info, Us, and Edu are all governed by the United States of America. 😮

The word-based domain extensions, for example, Dot Social, managed by corporations based in the United States of America. 😮

To escape America's rule of law, you not only want hosting outside the United States, but you want a country level domain name to be safe. 😉

@theking@mskey.nekomimi.party Install Vivaldi Browser. Give it notification permission. Visit your Fediverse Site, login, and when asked, if you want to allow notifications, say, yes. Click the Vivaldi logo next to the address bar, click on add page too, and select your home screen, then select "install".

You now have your own app for Sharkey. This will work for Misskey, CherryPick, and Mastodon too.

@kims This is why, I have been developing a list of Non Us Domain Extensions on the Fediverse.

They may be able to monitory the Fediverse, but at least they may not have their authority, everywhere.

I also have been developing a list of digital service providers, outside Us-jurisdiction, too. Because it is important, that people be able to find things, such as web hosting, not subject to Us Laws.

@housepanther@goblackcat.social @shanmukhateja@social.linux.pizza Corporations are smart, because they focus on easy 1st.

If you want people to adapt your product and service, it needs to start easy. You cannot come out with something that is hard, then slowly make it easy. Few, if anyone, will have adopted your product and service, by the time it is. You must 1st start easy, and then add features as you go along.

I wish more developers understood marketing and human behavior.

I know why people do not switch to the Fediverse, or why they do not switch to secure messaging services, outside the reach of corporate and government oversight.

It is more convenient not to do so.

A lot of these free, open source developments, target geeks. Congratulation, if you're reading this, you likely have already put in more effort that it takes to sign up and use something else.

NO - Never - Get the idea out of your head, people will not give up convenience for better privacy. It is not in human nature and 30+ years of corporate and government oversight, should make that obvious. If it is not convenience, it does not matter how private and secure something is. Sorry, not sorry, those are just the facts. It is a hard pill to swallow, but swallow you must, so people can start focusing on making these many things, convenient.

I sometimes, although I cannot prove it, believe some of the developments behind better privacy and security, intentionally keep things hard, by design. That perhaps the FOSS world was infiltrated years ago, and that is why there has always been the pushback, on making things idiot-proof, graphically please, and simpler.

Mastodon and Misskey, for example, both use Activity Pub, but I should not need to copy and paste someone's username and manually search for them, to follow. It took years, for Mastodon, to make it easy for me to just stumble over a profile, and click a single button to follow.

If it is not simple, and easy, you're wasting everyone's time. Go code something else.
