David Wilkins<p>Yesterday, I explained how the <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Austin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Austin</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Maestro" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Maestro</span></a> hatchback was transformed into the <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Montego" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Montego</span></a> saloon/sedan. <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/BritishLeyland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BritishLeyland</span></a> considered a similar conversion for the smaller <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Metro" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Metro</span></a> as this prototype at the <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/BritishMotorMuseum" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BritishMotorMuseum</span></a> shows. This variant would have been a competitor for the <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Volkswagen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Volkswagen</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Derby" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Derby</span></a>, which was based on the <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Polo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Polo</span></a>. A longer nose, an extra side pillar and a notchback rear made for a bigger car, although the compromises imposed by sharing gave it a slightly awkward look. The estate version was more handsome.
