It’s a good day when I can walk to the back deck and listen to some crashing waves

Oh wow I didn't know about this. There's a style of scuba diving called hookah diving where they leave the oxygen tank outside the fish tank so the diver can get in a small tank to clean it
A day in the life of a dive officer at Monterey Bay Aquarium
I’m very glad I live with a Filipino and a Japanese person whenever I’m in Monterey, coz that means there is always rice without me having to cook it, at all times.
Every time I’m on a call with someone at work who lives locally, they ask me for my restaurant recs.
Happily, I have them.

While biking the coastal trail Sunday eve, we met Salinas residents David, a teacher, and his daughter, Priscilla, home on spring break from her CalPoly classes.
Among the topics we touched on was April 10-13 Sea Otter Classic, which we think of as one big bike party! Who it’s for, how to get free admission, and history of #SeaOtterClassic: https://bikemonterey.org/april-10-13-sea-otter-classic-2025.html
My perfect Monterey breakfast is (at my home): a gimbap I got from the Korean store (made by an auntie at the back of the shop, not Trader Joe’s), soy sauce, wasabi, coffee.

Did you know that the towns next to Monterey, Seaside and Marina, have a surprisingly large no of small Korean grocers?
There are so many! They all sell Korean foods, fresh and shelf stable. Each one has a Korean grandma or two or three making banchan and kimchi at the back of the shop.
I frequently go to get freshly made kimchi and gimbaps. And of course, Shin Black noodles too.
- First Oriental Market, Seaside
- Hong’s Market, Marina
- Chon’s Market, Marina
- Asian Market, Marina
For location reasons, I usually end up going to the Seaside one but when I can, all of the Marina ones are amazing too.
And if I’m in Marina I pair it with a trip to Lee’s Chinese. I skip the standard Chinese fare and get their Korean Chinese homemade jjampong seafood noodles.
Types of tofu at a small Korean market in Seaside, CA
(Kim’s Market on Broadway. Get the vegetarian gimbap at the counter too, go before 1pm when they usually run out)
I found the only Lebanese market here. They have more spices than all of Monterey and Pacific Grove put together
The shawarma smelled incredible but I was too full from tacos, so I promise to be back
My ongoing taco exploration of Seaside / Marina / Monterey
1. Barba Azul: fave so far for sinaloan seafood tacos
2. The truck outside the paint shop on Fremont at night. I think it’s called El Peregrino but I can’t find it online (will update when I find the name)
3. The tacos inside the Lopez liquor store along Del Monte in Monterey
4. Zarape: I come here when I want a hunk of above average tacos, but the other places are better
