SubstackSimon Campbell on SubstackWhen starting a new musical project experience tell us that getting the business side of it clear from the outset is crucial and saves a lot of heartache later on. On Tuesday, @Suzy Starlite , @Dave Boyd and I arranged to meet down at Ginjinha do Sanguinhal, a cool coffee shop located close to Dave’s house. This tied in nicely as we were off to visit a luthier in Óbidos that very morning as I needed the nut of our Fylde custom 12 string modifying slightly to accept a thicker low G string. Roger Bucknall MBE—the owner of Fylde—usually fits a plain G string which, although it sounds great, is tricky to keep in tune. It’s a simple job, which along with other minor repairs I would normally undertake myself, but I don’t own a suitable file and they are very expensive, especially considering it’s a one off mod. ////// We had never been inside the walls of the historic City before and were blown away with the architecture and vibe. It was raining but still very busy with visitors and the selection of shops, albeit tourist centric, was quite amazing. Luís Eusébio’s studio is located in the North of the City and we arrived to a very warm welcome. He makes a variety of high end traditional instruments and also undertakes repairs on anything with strings! Whilst chewing the fat we found out Luís was a good friend of Andy Manson and Adriano Sérgio, who are both superb luthiers and good pals of ours. Small world—there is certainly something happening up here. We left with the mod completed and a spring in our step. Before leaving we checked the route to Ginjinha do Sanguinhal only to find it was closed on Tuesday so we rearranged to meet at Prohibition—where we are playing on June 1st—which is located just outside the walls of the City. We had a great meeting and nailed down all the financial and practical issues of working together. It was also a good time to flesh out the content of the Vibrationists website. A great afternoon. ////// We went home and I cooked dinner using recipes from the excellent Lebanese Kitchen cookbook featuring a pumpkin gifted to us by Dave and his wonderful partner Freya. Whilst the vegetable was roasting we whipped up the final four acoustic panels in the mixing end of the Lab. ////// Yesterday we had a great six hour rehearsal and are really making progress with our new set. Onwards…

Spotify is trumpeting big paydays for artists – but only a tiny fraction of them are actually thriving | Music | The Guardian theguardian.com/music/2025/mar

Spotify is for musicians what parasites are to their hosts.

'Spotify has asserted that 2024 was “another record year” for songwriters, with $4.5bn paid to music publishers (who distribute royalty payments to songwriters) over the past two years. But given Spotify has been accused in the US, by the Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC), of trying to reduce its payments to songwriters by reclassifying its premium subscriptions as “bundles” as they contain access to audiobooks, this claim will not be warmly welcomed by everyone.'

Alan Greenspan once said—on the record—that 'worker insecurity' is a must for the capitalist system to work.

Daniel Ek earns 2.5 billion times the salary of the average UK musician.

Daniel Ek invests many millions in a company that uses AI to murder people.

Fuck Spotify.

SubstackSimon Campbell on SubstackThis week has been productive.  Our recording studio—aka sonic laboratory—is progressing rapidly and the mixing console and electronics should be ready for installation by the end of next week. Yesterday, we received a pile of acoustic panels and bass traps from GIK Acoustics, which will complement the mountain of custom BBC-designed panels we've had since 2014, which have traveled with us throughout Europe since being made in Spain back in 2014. We're now ready to install everything! ////// Later, @Dave Boyd visited and following lunch, we worked on two songs for our Vibrationists project's live set.  We created a new arrangement of Take Time To Grow Old for Wurlitzer, bass, and guitar, and also developed a new song, Hey Girl, for our upcoming album. It’s always tricky playing with a new rhythm engine as @Suzy Starlite has to bond with their unique and individual groove, but it's sounding fantastic and we're looking forward to next week's session. Dave and his wonderful partner Freya are coming for dinner on Saturday which should be great fun. ////// I'm currently writing an article about our Date Nights, which should be published next week and Starlite is finishing another featuring our latest Hounds Of Rock, Edith and Françoise—aka the squeakers. Busy busy. Much love Simon https://vibrationists.eu
