Witness: Most tribal nations at #DakotaAccessPipeline #protest ‘didn’t know who #Greenpeace was’

By: Mary Steurer - March 3, 2025

"A #Lakota organizer said in a video deposition played to jurors Monday that the #StandingRockSiouxTribe led the protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline, not Greenpeace.

"#NickTilsen, an Oglala Sioux Tribe citizen and #activist, called the notion that Greenpeace orchestrated the protests 'paternalistic.'

"'I think that people underestimate the complexity and the sophistication of tribal nations,' Tilsen said.

"Tilsen’s deposition was the latest testimony heard by the nine-person jury in the marathon trial between pipeline developer Energy Transfer and Greenpeace.

"#EnergyTransfer claims Greenpeace secretly aided and abetted destructive and violent behavior by protesters during the #demonstrations, which took place in south central #NorthDakota near the #StandingRockReservation in 2016 and 2017. It also claims that Greenpeace orchestrated a misinformation campaign to defame the company, leading a group of banks to back out of financing the project. Energy Transfer seeks roughly $300 million from the environmental organization.

"Greenpeace denies Energy Transfer’s allegations. The group says it has never condoned violence, and only played a supporting role during the protests.

"Tilsen said he got involved in the protests before Greenpeace. He was invited to join the cause by former Standing Rock Chairman Dave Archambault and his sister, Jodi Archambault, he said.

"'They called me and said, ‘Hey, we need your help at Standing Rock,’ Tilsen said.

"Standing Rock has long opposed the Dakota Access Pipeline, stating the project poses a pollution threat, infringes on tribal sovereignty and has disrupted sacred cultural sites.

"It was Standing Rock leadership that laid the groundwork for the protests against the pipeline’s construction in 2016, Tilsen said.

"He said organizers later invited Greenpeace to support the camps, including by providing supplies and nonviolent direct action training. Tilsen said he only felt comfortable reaching out to Greenpeace because a friend of his, Cy Wagoner, worked there.

"He said since Wagoner is from the #NavajoNation, he trusted that Greenpeace would respect Standing Rock’s leadership of the camps.

"Indigenous communities are often reluctant to invite outside nonprofits to help with Native rights issues, Tilsen added. He said they often don’t understand Native nations’ unique relationship with the U.S. government.

"Greenpeace wasn’t a big part of the protests, Tilsen said.

"'To be honest, most of the tribal nations didn’t know who Greenpeace was,' he said.

"Countless other groups — including representatives from more than 300 Native nations — came to the protest camps in solidarity with Standing Rock, said Tilsen.

"'Quite frankly, our list of allies was hundreds,' he said.

"Tilsen said he was involved in several protest actions against the Dakota Access Pipeline in 2016 and 2017, including those that involved marching on the pipeline easement, jumping in front of equipment and using lockboxes — also known as 'sleeping dragons' — to disable construction machinery.

"None of the protest actions were coordinated by Greenpeace, he said.

"Tilsen said he never saw or endorsed any destruction of property or acts of violence toward construction workers or law enforcement. He also pushed back on the assertion that any of the protest activities he participated in qualified as trespassing.

"The pipeline passes through land recognized as belonging to the #SiouxNation under #treaties signed by the U.S. government in 1851 and 1868. The U.S. government later annexed that land in violation of those treaties.

"Tilsen asked how Lakota citizens could be trespassing on land that was unlawfully taken from them.

"'This is the conundrum we find ourselves in,' he said.

"Employees of Greenpeace said during video depositions played last week that the environmental organization brought 20 to 30 lockboxes to the camps.

"Tilsen said while he saw many lockboxes during protests, he wasn’t sure where any of them came from. He also said he never heard anyone from Greenpeace tell demonstrators to use the devices.

"Tilsen said that David Khoury, an employee for Greenpeace, helped identify potential sites for protest actions. Tilsen added that while Wagoner — another Greenpeace employee — didn’t plan protest activities, he trained people on how to conduct them.

"The trial, which is before Southwest Central Judicial District Judge James Gion, is expected to last roughly four more weeks."

🚨 Alert: #RadioactiveUranium Trucks on the #NavajoNation Today (2/12)

"A banner on the deadly haul route today, Wednesday, as two radioactive uranium transport trucks pass by Dine' homes in #TubaCity on the Navajo Nation. #Dine' families said they had no warning and the #NavajoGovernment sold them out."

By Brenda Norrell, Censored News, Feb. 12, 2025

TUBA CITY, Navajo Nation -- "#EnergyFuels #radioactive #UraniumWaste trucks passed through the Navajo Nation today, following a secretive agreement between the Navajo Nation and Energy Fuels.

"Two radioactive uranium waste trucks passed through #TubaCity headed to the uranium mill in the #WhiteMesaUte community, between 11 a.m. and noon today.

"In a region still strewn with #RadioactiveWaste from the #ColdWar, and gas and oil wells choking the people -- now uranium waste being transported by Dine' homes with only a tarp [!!!] covering tons of radioactive waste. The trucks are dumping their loads in the White Mesa #Ute community at the mill in southeastern #Utah.

"The secretive agreement between Energy Fuels and the Navajo Nation government, says there will be two to twelve trucks a day with radioactive waste from Energy Fuels #PinyonPlain #UraniumMine in the #GrandCanyon, for the next three to four years.

"Navajo Utah Commission members voiced their opposition to the uranium transport during a meeting with Navajo Nation EPA Executive Director #StephenEtsitty in #WindowRock on Tuesday. This comes after Energy Fuels made a public announcement of the agreement with the tribe.

"The Navajo Utah Commission meeting revealed that Energy Fuels agreed to pay the Navajo Nation government $1.2 million during the negotiations. Dine' in Western Navajo said that Navajo President #BuuNygren showed them how much money their lives are worth: $1.2 million."

#NavajoNation Dishonors Legacy of #KleeBenally: Agrees to #Uranium Transport Through #Navajo Communities

By #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, February 3, 2025

"The Navajo Nation dishonored the memory and legacy of Klee Benally by agreeing to allow radioactive uranium trucks to travel through the Navajo Nation. It was what Klee spent the last years of his life fighting against.

"The deadly trucks from the #EnergyFuels #PinyonPlain uranium mine in the #GrandCanyon will pass through the #Havasupai's homeland, and then past the homes of #Paiute, #Dine' and #Hopi in Arizona before reaching the dumping ground: The Energy Fuels #UraniumMill in the #WhiteMesaUte Community in Southern #Utah.

"Klee is being honored with a #NuclearFreeFutures Award in New York in March.

"Nuclear Free Futures said, in announcing the award, 'Klee Benally was a Navajo activist and musician and member of the Navajo #Tódichiinii Clan and the #Nakai #Diné Clan. In addition to a
musical career with his siblings in the band #Blackfire,

"'Klee was a passionate campaigner and filmmaker exposing the #colonialist legacy of uranium mines and working for the cleanup of the more than 500 abandoned uranium mines that continue to contaminate the Navajo Nation. A month before his death on December 30, 2023, Klee published his book, '#NoSpiritualSurrender: #IndigenousAnarchy in Defense of the Sacred.'

"The award will be accepted by his mother Berta Benally.

"Klee, co-founder of #HaulNo!, warned of the danger to the water and rivers from the uranium mining in the Grand Canyon, and the planned deadly transport of radioactive ore, before he passed in
December 2023: 'There is possible radioactive contamination to land, water, and air from the #CanyonMine, White
Mesa Mill, and transport of uranium would impact northern Arizona, southeast Utah, the #ColoradoRiver, #MoenkopiWash, the #SanJuanRiver, and the lands and cultural resources of the #Havasupai, Hopi, Navajo, Ute, and Paiute peoples.'"

#NavajoNation is 'Back Peddling' by Allowing #Uranium Transport through #Dine' Communities and More Dumping on #Utes

By Brenda Norrell, Censored News, Feb. 8, 2025

TUBA CITY -- "#LeonaMorgan, Dine' co-founder of #HaulNo!, said the Navajo Nation is now "back peddling" by allowing radioactive uranium waste to be transported through Dine' communities. This radioactive transport from the #GrandCanyon means even more deadly waste for another Native community -- the #WhiteMesaUte community in #Utah.

"Now, with little or no information along the haul route, the Navajo government expects the Dine' Chapters on the route to each have an emergency preparedness plan. Leona asked if the Dine' communities are aware of this and whether the Navajo Chapters are certified to deal with radioactive emergencies.

"'Who are their First Responders?' Ultimately, Dine' will have to confront the Navajo President and the Navajo Department of Justice, she said.
'We were not included in that agreement,' Leona said of the agreement between the Navajo Nation and #Energy Fuels.

"'There was no free, prior and informed consent,' Leona said, quoting the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples [#UNDRIP]. 'The people in the communities were not consulted.'

"'How can they start transporting on February 12th, when there aren't even any checkpoints? We don't even have an #AirMonitoring system,' Leona said of the lack of preparation for radioactive
transport on the Navajo Nation.
Energy Fuels plans to pass through Navajo communities with six to ten trucks of radioactive waste,
beginning on Feb. 12, 2025.

"Leona urged communities to organize, and pointed out that Navajo Chapters can have their own checkpoints. With the new push for '#DrillBabyDrill,' by the U.S. President, the Navajo Nation faces an uncertain future, she said. The U.S. is investing money into the development of #CriticalEarthMinerals and investing in Energy Fuels mill at White Mesa Ute.

"'We need to push our government to do what we want -- not what the federal government wants.'

"'It's going to get worse because they think nuclear is clean energy,' Leona said of the push for alternative energy.

"The Navajo Nation's agreement with Energy Fuels means more dangerous radioactive dumping in the #WhiteMesaUte community. In the agreement, Energy Fuels states it will transport 10,000 tons of uranium-bearing cleanup materials from abandoned #UraniumMines within the Navajo Nation.

"Leona was recently voted by the Navajo Nation Council to serve on the Diné #UraniumRemediation Advisory Commission, in an advisory position to the Navajo President and Council.

"Speaking in #TubaCity on Saturday, Leona said Haul No! began in 2016 when it became known that the Pinyon Plain uranium mine would begin mining in the Grand Canyon. Now, there is the new battle as the Navajo Nation government has approved uranium transport through Navajo communities to the White Mesa Ute community.

"Energy Fuels #PinyonPlain Mine, and the mill in southern Utah, threaten Native communities throughout the region."

Hey #BuuNygren, maybe listen to what the Diné youth are saying?

#Navajo #protesters say people fear #deportation threats, other changes under #Trump

by Arlyssa D. Becenti, January 29, 2025

WINDOW ROCK — "Bryson Sam and his siblings stood at an intersection in the Navajo Nation capital under gray clouds and a chilly breeze, holding signs that read, 'No Human is Illegal on Stolen Land' and 'Native Youth Deserve Better.' Across the street, another protester waved a #Palestinian flag, holding a sign that read, 'Make White Supremacists Scared Again.'

"The demonstration was their response to events unfolding across the country and in Arizona. Last week, The Arizona Republic reported on unverified claims circulating on social media that Navajo citizens were being detained in connection with President Donald Trump’s executive order on mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.

"'My people outside of the Navajo Nation are getting a lot of backlash, thinking they're immigrants, when no one is illegal on stolen land,' said Sam. 'A lot of Native elders and adults aren't aware because a lot of stuff is being hidden. Native youth like me are aware but our voice feels dim. What happened in the 1920s in Germany is happening now, deportation, concentration camps, it's basically adding up. I don't want to make seem like we are letting it happen. A lot of my people are afraid. A lot of them saying we are scared for our future.'

"Sam said he initially waited for someone else to take action, but instead of standing by, he decided it was up to him to step forward and make his voice heard. He emphasized that his protest is not only about raising awareness of the challenges faced by Native people in urban areas but also about shedding light on the broader threat of targeting of people of color by the Trump administration and ICE.

"'I am afraid not only for my future but for everyone's future,' said Sam. 'Not only Native people, but #BlackPeople, #MexicanPeople, everyone. We are no longer individual tribes we stand together. Whatever feud we may have had back in the day, no more, because now it's time to stand together.'

"Following a meeting last week, leaders have advised tribal members to carry state-issued identification, such as a driver’s license or another form of photo ID if available. Additionally, a Certificate of Indian Blood may be helpful.

"Navajo tribal members affected by ICE raids can contact the Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission Office at (928) 871-7436. People who encounter issues with federal immigration officials can reach out to Operation Rainbow Bridge at 855-435-7672, visit their website at operationrainbowbridge . com, or email info @ operationrainbowbridge . com.

LIVE: #WesternMiningActionNetwork in #Montreal

By #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews
November 14, 2024

MONTREAL -- "The Western Mining Action Network is meeting today in Montreal, with speakers from the network's #IndigenousCaucus speaking on the #NuclearFuelChain, defending the water and land, and the rights stated in the United Nations Declaration on Indigenous Peoples [#UNDIP].

The Deadly Nuclear Fuel Chain

"#PetuucheGilbert, #AcomaPueblo, said there should be more concern over the #NuclearFuel chain, #radiation and #UraniumMining. The nuclear fuel chain includes the making of the #AtomicBomb, and the #NuclearWaste from #SpentFuelRods in #NuclearPowerPlants.

"In his homeland, in the Grants mining district in #NewMexico, the abandoned #UraniumMines are #radioactive hazards affecting the water, air and the animals on the ground.

"Nearby on the #NavajoNation, there are more than 500 abandoned uranium mines and there are massive #UraniumMill waste sites, where the ore was processed. These all emit #RadonGas. He pointed out that the #McArthurRiver, #KeyLakeUranium Mine and mill in northern #Saskatchewan, Canada is the world's largest uranium mine and mill.

"Petuuche said he believes that the cancers now that the people in his area are suffering from are a result of radioactivity. There was also the atomic bomb testing in Nevada. All of that radioactivity spread over the entire United States. #Downwinders breathing the radioactivity in the air are also radiation victims."

Kudos to my friends at the #InternationalUraniumFilmFestival for bringing awareness of #nuclear issues AND being voted one of the "Coolest Film Festivals"!

"The International Uranium Film Festival (#IUFF) is one of the '25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World 2024'. Thanks to the prestigious MovieMaker Magazine in Hollywood, Los Angeles, which selects the Coolest Film Festivals every year. Founded in #RioDeJaneiro, the unique film festival, also known as #AtomicAgeCinemaFest, is the only film festival in #Brazil to receive this honor this year.

"'The Uranium Film Festival is certainly one of the most unique festivals we've ever had on our list, but its singular focus shines an important light on problems that unite communities all around the world — and in fact our entire world. In the year that #Oppenheimer dominated at the Oscars, it feels like the messages it has carried for years are gaining much wider interest and attention,' says Tim Molloy, Editor in Chief at MovieMaker Magazine.

"'You’ve never seen two people get more done than the life and project- partner duo #MárciaGomesDeOliveira and #NorbertGSuchanek, who run the International Uranium Film Festival in deep collaboration with #activists around the world. The festival has its grand event in Rio, but also does an extensive U.S. tour in regions impacted by #uranium-related industry. Inevitably, folks wonder whether there are enough films on the subject to warrant a festival. The answer is yes. This, of course, is because the issue is expansive, impacting all 50 U.S. states and many more corners of the world than most folks realize. From the #NavajoNation to #LasVegas to #Chicago and many places between, this spirited #DIYArt, #advocacy, and #activism project brings folks together in a space of support, education, #SharedOutrage, and a good time. The International Uranium Film Festival is a refreshing example of what activism and advocacy can be: inclusive, expansive, and celebratory,' writes filmmaker Hadley Austin for MovieMaker Magazine.

'“The International Uranium Film Festival (IUFF) is honored by this acknowledgement as one of the 25 Coolest Film Festivals of 2024! Produced by Norbert Suchanek and Marcia Gomes de Oliviera and based in Rio de Janeiro, since 2011 the IUFF has provided a platform for more than 300 films in more than 50 cities in nine countries around the world: Germany, Brazil, India, Canada, United States, Portugal, Jordan, Denmark and Norway.' #LibbeHaLevy, Producer/Host, #NuclearHotseat and Ambassador to the USA for the International Uranium Film Festival."

FLAGSTAFF, Arizona – "On Friday, August 23, 2024, members of #TóNizhóníÁní traveled to Stockholm, Sweden, for World Water Week 2024, an international leading conference on global water issues organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute. Earlier this year, Tó Nizhóní Ání was invited to attend World Water Week 2024 and asked to be on a panel on #GreenColonialism. The #Sámi national youth organization, #Sáminuorra, organized this panel. Given this panel's #Indigenous youth focus, Tó Nizhóní Ání took this opportunity to fund raise and send a delegation of Diné (#Navajo) youth from the Black Mesa region to represent and speak on this topic.

"During the panel on Green Colonialism, #JarenNumkena, Diné youth from Black Mesa, spoke on his upbringing as a farmer, the history of his family as a #coal-impacted community member, and the proposed projects on and near Black Mesa, such as the #BlackMesaPumpedStorageProject and the #HydrogenPipeline. As our nation moves to alternative forms of energy, we must do so in a way that does not use or impact our water on the #NavajoNation, which is why we need #solar and #wind energy."
