Today I went on a ~23km #hike up and down the North East #coast between #Tynemouth and #Blyth, and then back to #WhitleyBay. I can't be more accurate about how far I went because I tried an experiment: leaving my #phone at home.

I liked it, and think I'll do more #disconnected trips, but I did get a bit bored around 15km in - so I'll need to find a #music / #podcast player to take on the next long walk.

Organic Maps is a great Google Maps alternative that's free, open-source, and offline. I used it yesterday to find my way in an unknown neighbourhood, and it worked like a charm.

#Meshtastic is absolutely thriving in the lower North Island, here in Aotearoa New Zealand. Tracking its bloom worldwide, I believe this to be the most successful example of (in the sense of broadly adopted) Internet-independent and community-owned communications infrastructure we have to date.

What is your favorite tech gadget that does NOT connect to the internet?

Palms were offline devices that only synced with your computer when put on a docking station.

You could read and reply to emails offline, book or cancel meetings, and sync with your computer later. The latest versions allowed you to snap pictures and listen to your music.

No servers running constantly. No data spilled everywhere. Days worth of battery on a single charge.

The future stole our cables, and it took our attention span and our privacy with it.
