Flipboard Culture DeskThe governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS, the organization that gives out the Oscars) have met today to discuss their "belated and tepid" response to the beating and detention of Oscar-winning Palestinian documentarian Hamdan Ballal. Leading members of the Academy including Olivia Colman, Javier Bardem, Emma Thompson, Ava DuVernay and Adam McKay signed a letter demanding a more forceful response to Ballal's treatment by Israeli authorities, saying the original statement "fell far short of the sentiments this moment calls for." It doesn’t tell you why Israel must take these actions—just that they happen. And that’s the trick, isn’t it? You take something rooted in decades of war and rejectionism and terrorism, and you strip it down to one story, one image, so that by the time the credits roll, you don’t see history—you see a villain. And in No Other Land, that villain is always Israel.* I saw the film a few months ago at an activist screening up here in North Denmark, and I had exactly the same thoughts.

OstfriesinDie diesjährigen <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Oscars" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Oscars</a> waren die wahrscheinlich unpolitischste Verleihung. Wo sich vor der Wahl noch die Mehrheit von Hollywood medienwirksam gegen Trump positioniert hatte, herrschte nun...Stille.. Es zeigt sich, dass politischer Widerstand ein gewisses Risiko beinhalten kann...aber es geht in den USA eben auch um viel, um alles. Und da hätte ich auf mehr Zeichen von den Promis gehofft, auch als Vorbild für andere. Der Schleier ist gefallen - Promi bedeutet nicht automatisch auch Rückgrat.
