We passed by a mixture of locals and tourists visiting the castle. I felt only contempt for them. I was leaving this hick place forever!

Then, I saw an unmistakable purple kimono. What was Maiyoi-chan doing here? She hated towns. I touched the wild ginger brooch she’d given me, but pretended not to see her or her waving as I passed. How could I, after abandoning her without even saying goodbye?

“That’s my story. How pathetic. I whine about everyone abandoning me. How am I any better? My family's right. I’m worthless trash.”
