@samsterby @baggetun To be honest, this track was very useful for me to commute to work and back. You could jump on at the station at the end of my road and then hop off directly in the city center. It's very good at serving the local towns surrounding Manchester City Center.

I liked that it ran the older trains too. They were a little dirty and, like most of Manchester, needs a good clean, but it gave it a little more charm.

@samsterby @baggetun If my memory serves me correct (its been a while) there are two "main" trains you can get from Manchester to Liverpool Lime Street.

There's the one pictured above that departs from Manchester Oxford Road stops at every station along the way and takes (I think) about 1.5 to 2 hours.

And there's another that goes a lot faster and has just a handful of stops, taking about 1 hour from "door to door".

In praise of British Trains (hopefully the new name for a re-nationalised service). So I took 3 journeys recently that Ive never done before, which can be stressful if they are time dependent. All three were a joy, easy to change and nice seats. We don't have trains in Malta, we only have an overused and generally badly planned, inadequate bus service. So being on trains was lovely. I do wish we had those swivel direction seats theyve had in Japan for years though.

Scottish Greens Co-Leader Patrick Harvie, rightly stresses the need to invest in public transport to reach net zero targets:

'With real investment in public transport, we can make it cheaper & accessible to all whilst protecting out planet. With new rail routes, reliable buses & integrated ticketing, we could end the reliance on private cars. This investment in public transport infrastructure would benefit us for decades to come';

But what we get is a new runway at Heathrow!

Lots of good arguments for car congestion pricing in this video by Streetfilms. I especially liked seeing the older lady on a bike.

I made a mistake once, about 20 years ago, to drive through Manhattan (in a minivan, with my family). It was a nightmare. If I left a car length space in front, another car would change lanes and take it, almost immediately. The average speed was less than walking.

Especially electrifying public transport. As well as improving the UX of services, eg linking them up across regions, and the whole country. So they become practical and pleasant to use, instead of being the transport equivalent of wearing a hair shirt.
