I qualified as a "Tolkien Purist" when I said Jeff Bezos's "Rings of Power" tv series was garbage.

Turns out there is some overlap between appreciating RoP and being prepared to sell the US of A down the river.

(The racist and homophobe haters were always MAGAtty too.)

So billionaires who play you for suckers, selling you trash storlines, might not really have your best interests at heart?

Just finished S2 of #RingsOfPower. Look, even if you ignore the many and heinous crimes against Tolkien and chronology, just from a basic storytelling point of view, this is just fucking awful. Cargo cult Tolkien. An embarrassment. Nonsensical, zombie dog shit. Bezos is better off funding cock-shaped rockets than this monstrosity.

There may well be a S3, but I won’t be watching.

I think the #RingsOfPower has been pretty good. Some really great moments. Some things I've found a bit flat. But overall, it's like talking to a fellow Tolkien nerd about the appendices to Lord of the Rings, speculating on what might have happened way-back-when.

I was thinking about why the #Netflix #Witcher series had crashed so badly, and why the #Amazon #RingsOfPower is going the same way, and I found this:

"Hollywood had become a winner-takes-all economy. As of 2021, CEOs at the majority of the largest companies and conglomerates in the industry drew salaries between two hundred and three thousand times greater than those of median employees..."

I'm not sure why this is the case but there is an astonishingly large number of openly racist people among the Tolkein/LOTR/Hobbit fan base. To the point that it rivals other places where I usually see the red hat brigade mouthing off (Facebook, YouTube comments, TikTok, etc).

It's really something how many Tolkein "fans" are up in arms because #RingsOfPower had the apparent audacity to cast black actors and actresses for some roles. For one thing, who's to say Tolkein didn't intend for some characters to be dark-skinned? We don't know because Tolkein didn't fixate on a characters' skin tone. And neither should you. Rather arrogant to presume all his characters were white.

You'd think that people who lost the Civil War and lost the 2020 election handily would learn at some point to keep their opinions to themselves.

“The struggle to remain good in a fallen and complicated world is compelling enough on its own; they don’t need extra arguments for evil or the prestige TV insistence that there’s no such thing as good and bad. By trying to turn The Lord of the Rings into great TV, all Payne and McKay managed was to rob Tolkien’s universe of what makes it special.”
