Private groups work to identify and report #StudentProtesters for possible #deportation

“Now they’re using tools of the state to actually go after people,” said a Columbia graduate student from South Asia who has been active in protests and spoke on condition of anonymity because of concerns about losing her visa. “We suddenly feel like we’re being forced to think about our survival.”

By ADAM GELLER, March 29, 2025

NEW YORK (AP) — "When a protester was caught on video in January at a New York rally against Israel, only her eyes were visible between a mask and headscarf. But days later, photos of her entire face, along with her name and employer, were circulated online.

"'Months of them hiding their faces went down the drain!' a fledgling technology company boasted in a social media post, claiming its #FacialRecognition tool had identified the woman despite the coverings.

"She was anything but a lone target. The same software was also used to review images taken during months of #ProPalestinian marches at U.S. colleges. A #RightWingJewish group said some people identified with the tool were on a list of names it submitted to President Donald #Trump’s administration, urging that they be deported in accordance with his call for the expulsion of foreign students who participated in 'pro-jihadist' protests.

"Other #ProIsrael groups have enlisted help from supporters on campuses, urging them to report foreign students who participated in protests against the war in #Gaza to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency."

Well said:

“Protesters, including #Jewish groups, say the Trump admin conflates their criticism of #Israel's assault on Gaza & their advocacy for Palestinian rights with #antisemitism & support for Hamas.”

#Trump & the other Islamophobes can’t seem to get their mind around the idea that a person can think that both what #Hamas did Oct7 was wrong AND what Netanyahu is doing to #Palestinians in #Gaza is wrong.

#RumeysaOzturk didn’t even mention Hamas in her op-ed.

Today on the Belgian news, interviews with students in the US after the deportation of Rumeysa Ozturk.

An interviewee was pulled aside after calling emergency services for a friend. Police noticed his Dutch accent, and asked for papers "because he sounded foreign, and we can't have that here". 🙄

Andrew DeCort: ‘…citizens & residents under #authoritarian regimes come to feel…they must insulate their consciousness behind a protective layer of fear, hyper-vigilance & self-censorship. The regime creates this helmeted consciousness through acts that stoke public anxiety, insecurity & terror. The #ArbitraryArrest of #RumeysaOzturk…is an example... these lawless acts are meant to send…a clear & potent message:“If you cross us we will punish you, with or without the law.‘ facebook.com/share/p/16GuAE5oL

The arrest of Ms Ozturk is over the top crazy. This is a doctoral student, a Fulbright Scholar, here on an F-1 student visa to study who expressed an opinion. The Fulbright Program is a Department of State Program! A program designed to connect people, connect countries. I worked with Fulbright Scholars, they are amazing scholars and amazing people!

#RumeysaOzturk was arrested on her way to Iftar dinner, sunset in Boston is ~7PM, so she was likely arrested ~6:30. The petition for #habeas was filed at 10PM & Judge Talwani’s order to not remove her from Massachusetts was filed at 10:53PM the same day, ~4½hrs after her arrest.

Asst US Atty Mark Sauter said Thurs that her transfer to #ICE’s detention facility in Louisiana didn’t violate Talwani’s order because they relocated her before it was issued.

NOT OK

A. There is NO evidence that #RumeysaOzturk did any of the things #MarcoRubio said. She wrote an op-ed. That’s it.

B. Even if she had participated in #protests, what the #Trump admin did is NOT the process a #visa holder goes through. Normally you receive a notice & have a month. They arrested her on the street w/no notice, took her phone & belongings, threw her in the back of a van, & flew her to a detention center in a different state.

They may as well have black bagged her.

#Tufts University sent an email to alumni on Thursday, detailing what school officials know about #RumeysaOzturk, a Turkish graduate student who was detained by federal authorities.

"The university had no knowledge of this incident in advance, did not share any information with federal authorities prior to the event," the email to alumni says.

The Stasi are here, they are operating with impunity, and any one of us could be disappeared next.

Will Bunch writes, You’ve probably seen something like this before — but only in a movie, and only in a film that was seeking to capture the horrors of daily life under Joseph Stalin at the peak of his 1930s purges across the USSR, or maybe a Gestapo thriller set in Nazi Germany.

At 5:30 p.m. on a spring day on an urban residential street, a young woman in a bright white coat, hajib, and sneakers, engrossed in her mobile phone, emerges from a residence. Within seconds, a gaggle of men in black, who’ve been waiting for hours in a car nearby, surround the startled pedestrian, as the apparent leader wrestles away her phone.
