Shantell PowellAround 2000, I knew a guy who started his own Fight Club. I know because he talked about it (ironic) and because he'd show up covered in bruises and cuts. He knew I was a martial artist and invited me to join. I wanted nothing to do with it. I didn't study martial arts to beat people up or to be beaten up. One day he showed up with a huge lye burn on his arm. He is one of those folks who missed the point of a cautionary tale. There are complicated issues at play that could be engaged with seriously, but to see the cheering on from people for whom he didn't exist yesterday and stopped existing minutes later is soul crushing.I have read only 2 good thoughts on this that I'm still mulling over. Often these are metaphorical codes for valid reactions to what is happening to you.For instance, paranoia is a natural, reasonable result when you're dependent upon people who keep repeatedly betraying, deceiving, and abusing you. How can you trust anyone when everyone you rely on is literally out to get you? Maybe that comes to extend to aliens or whatever, but your mind is trying to tell you something real. (And what really is the difference between paranoia and hypervigilence, a common PTSD symptom?)I don't think we should do away with the term, because these thoughts really do intrude on what we'd rather be thinking about. But imho that is wrong, because yes, depression as many other <a href="https://queer.group/tags/MentalHealthDisorders" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#MentalHealthDisorders</a> ARE crippling. Let us take a look at the definition of crippling in the Oxford Dixtionary:1. "damaging somebody's body so that they cannot walk or move well" Speaking for depression even with a medium depression I walk and speak slower and moving in general is much more exhausting.2. "seriously damaging or harming somebody/something" Depression affects all of your life. It makes it hard to get out if the bed in the morning, even taking care of your body. Often hygiene falls short, when even brushing your teeth is an impossible act.
