Riding a wave of pre-9/11 interest in Latin and Arabic cultures, "Desert Rose" peaked at No. 2 in Canada, No. 3 in Switzerland, No. 4 in Italy, No. 15 in the United Kingdom.

I was well aware of The Police when growing up, but by the time I got into music they had already basically broken up and Sting was doing solo albums. At first I considered this one of the least interesting songs on the album, but it grew on me over time with its quiet groove.
