Sarah Matthews<p>I’ve just finished Uncle Paul by Celia Fremlin, 1959, a brilliant story full of dark humour that’s set on a rainy summer holiday. Here are a few more thoughts on it… <br> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/audiobook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>audiobook</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/BookReview" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BookReview</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/Storygraph" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Storygraph</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span> <a href="https://app.thestorygraph.com/reviews/e2f4f580-a3f6-4fc9-97b9-7ea799cbc0e9" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">app.thestorygraph.com/reviews/</span><span class="invisible">e2f4f580-a3f6-4fc9-97b9-7ea799cbc0e9</span></a></p>
Zivan - Childless Cat Guy<p>I've finished: The Simoqin Prophecies by Samit Basu</p><p>Self-aware and breaking the fourth wall, The Simoqin Prophecies makes fun of classic tropes from myth, fairy tale and fantasy. But it is not trying to be funny, it is deadly serious about its own high fantasy world. </p><p>While it is not perfect in all it's choices, as an experienced fantasy reader I enjoyed the references to classic tropes and their deconstruction. Satire can be better when it's not trying too hard to make you laugh. </p><p><a href="https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/c468b1a3-d2e5-411e-96e4-81e08765fde3" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">app.thestorygraph.com/books/c4</span><span class="invisible">68b1a3-d2e5-411e-96e4-81e08765fde3</span></a></p><p>I'm glad I found it through a Story Graph reading challenge prompt. Sometimes you find a book that was written for you 20 years after it was published and wonder where it's been all these years. </p><p>I love reading challenges with prompts that specify a type of book and let you choose the book you'll read for that prompt. You can also use these prompts to find novels other members think fit a prompt you like. I found The Simoqin Prophecies in the Speculative fiction genres challenge, under the prompt for Comic Speculative Fiction. </p><p>The speculative fiction genres challenge:</p><p>app.thestorygraph.com/reading_challenges/fff6ad46-1acf-4f0b-a841-b769b72f7d14</p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/audiobooks" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>audiobooks</span></a></span> <br><a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/fantasy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fantasy</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/satire" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>satire</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/Au" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Au</span></a>;dioBooks <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/ReadingChallenge" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ReadingChallenge</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/StoryGraph" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>StoryGraph</span></a></p>

Zivan - Childless Cat Guy<p>I've finished: Scythe by Neal Shusterman</p><p>It was recommended as part of a Story Graph reading challenge under the prompt: </p><p>" 20. Dystopian Deconstruction (1 added)</p><p>Critiques the overused conventions of YA dystopias". </p><p>I found it to be a very conventional YA dystopia novel. </p><p>I see these prompts a a learning opportunity. If you've read Scythe and can enlighten me as to why it would be considered a diconstruction of YA dystopian conventions, I'd love to hear it. If you agree that it is not a diconstructi9on, can you recommend another novel for this prompt?</p><p>Mind you, in this reading challenge Anti YA is an adjacent prompt. </p><p>" 19. Anti-YA (2 added)</p><p>Challenges traditional YA tropes like the chosen one or insta-love." </p><p>I think this discussion will contain spoilers.
