Jonathan Kamens<p>OK, so, I finally got to someone from <a href="https://federate.social/tags/IdentityDefense" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IdentityDefense</span></a> on the phone, and apparently the reason why it's failing is because they can't match up the email address or phone number I gave them with what's in my <a href="https://federate.social/tags/TransUnion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TransUnion</span></a> credit report.<br>Note: I gave them a unique <a href="https://federate.social/tags/AnonAddy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AnonAddy</span></a> email address and my Google Voice # instead of my cell #, for privacy and identity protection reasons. So, again, their site can't cope with people who are already taking steps to protect their online identities. Awesome!</p>
MikeWas<p>So what does this mean? Never confuse your credit score for anything other than its true purpose—a way for the credit industry to see how much money they can make off you.</p><p><a href="https://esq.social/tags/CreditScore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CreditScore</span></a> <a href="https://esq.social/tags/TransUnion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TransUnion</span></a> <a href="https://esq.social/tags/Equifax" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Equifax</span></a> <a href="https://esq.social/tags/Experian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Experian</span></a></p>
MikeWas<p>And that leads us to the second reason: the credit bureaus have a financial interest in depressing your credit score, because they sell valuable marketing data about high-risk borrowers to subprime lenders. </p><p>The more high-risk files there are, the more money they make from subprime lenders. Low-risk borrowers just aren't as profitable.</p><p>👇</p><p><a href="https://esq.social/tags/CreditScore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CreditScore</span></a> <a href="https://esq.social/tags/TransUnion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TransUnion</span></a> <a href="https://esq.social/tags/Equifax" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Equifax</span></a> <a href="https://esq.social/tags/Experian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Experian</span></a></p>
MikeWas<p>That doesn't seem to make sense, though. Paying off your loan and having less debt should make you a better credit risk, not a worse one.</p><p>👇</p><p><a href="https://esq.social/tags/CreditScore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CreditScore</span></a> <a href="https://esq.social/tags/TransUnion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TransUnion</span></a> <a href="https://esq.social/tags/Equifax" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Equifax</span></a> <a href="https://esq.social/tags/Experian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Experian</span></a></p>
MikeWas<p>The official reason is that your credit score, in part, is based upon having a mix of different types of open credit—revolving, like credit cards; and installment, like auto and mortgage loans. If you close your last installment loan, this affects the "mix" in a way that drops your score. </p><p>👇</p><p><a href="https://esq.social/tags/CreditScore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CreditScore</span></a> <a href="https://esq.social/tags/TransUnion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TransUnion</span></a> <a href="https://esq.social/tags/Equifax" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Equifax</span></a> <a href="https://esq.social/tags/Experian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Experian</span></a></p>
MikeWas<p>Why does your credit score drop when you pay off a car loan?</p><p>A friend of mine was furious the other day, when he saw that paying off his car loan caused his score to drop about 40 points.</p><p>Why does this happen?</p><p>Two reasons.</p><p>👇</p><p><a href="https://esq.social/tags/CreditScore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CreditScore</span></a> <a href="https://esq.social/tags/TransUnion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TransUnion</span></a> <a href="https://esq.social/tags/Equifax" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Equifax</span></a> <a href="https://esq.social/tags/Experian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Experian</span></a></p>

Niels Provos<p>While EquiFax and Transunion are experts in hoovering up data of as many people as possible, they still seem to have a lot of learn about safe guarding that data.</p><p>With both of them having massive data breaches, I am glad to learn the price that is being put on my privacy: $5.21!</p><p>Thank you.</p><p><a href="https://ioc.exchange/tags/databreach" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>databreach</span></a> <a href="https://ioc.exchange/tags/privacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>privacy</span></a> <a href="https://ioc.exchange/tags/equifax" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>equifax</span></a> <a href="https://ioc.exchange/tags/transunion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>transunion</span></a></p>
Greg Bednarski<p>The (lack of) significant coverage regarding a <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/cybersecurity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cybersecurity</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/breach" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>breach</span></a> of <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/TransUnion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TransUnion</span></a> in the US is telling. It's so common, even for such sensitive information, that we're no longer really paying attention. "News" is for uncommon events, right?</p><p>BTW, the Massachusetts government posts all data breach notification letters. I count 38 *so far* for November. Today is the 14th. Yikes.</p><p><a href="https://www.mass.gov/lists/data-breach-notification-letters-november-2022" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">mass.gov/lists/data-breach-not</span><span class="invisible">ification-letters-november-2022</span></a></p>
