My new job sitch means new needs, specifically something I can bring on a rush-hour train, so I bought one of them E-skateboard thingies 🛹 just got it today & took it out for half a battery's worth of practice - it's a lot of fun, very easy, much faster than walking obvi & also I was acutely aware that I wasn't wearing a helmet, so ordering one of those now...

This board is on sale at vayabike.com at nearly 1/3 price, which certainly helped my decision 😁

Finally some good news today, in France!
The court ruled that the A69 highway was illegal: this absurd project would not bring any social benefit (it would be 10 minutes faster than existing roads) but would provide significant harm to the local environment and people while locking us even more in nonsensical car-first infrastructure!

After years of repression, false pretenses, and lies, this decision is a real relief!

‘Losing hope with every day that passes’: torment of the ships’ crews abandoned at sea
"Vihaan’s case is far from isolated. Thousands of seafarers, the backbone of the global shipping trade, are left abandoned in what the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) describes as a “cancer” of the industry. Cases have surged by 135%, from 132 vessels in 2023 to 312 last year, affecting more than 3,000 seafarers according to a joint ITF/International Labour Organization (ILO) database."

The Guardian · ‘Losing hope with every day that passes’: torment of the ships’ crews abandoned at seaBy Karen McVeigh

I think the priority for Canada is our East-West infrastructure. Be it rail, roads, pipeline, ports or whatever necessary, we need a strong and fast corridor for ourselves and to our shipping lanes coast to coast to coast. This we can do. We don't need the excuses that only weaken our resolve. #Canada #transportation

Me, in Bloomberg CityLab:

The Trump administration is causing chaos in transport research. Studies have been canceled, datasets have vanished, and experts have been fired.

The Transportation Research Board, a division of the National Academies, has caved to Trump’s demands for censorship, triggering upheaval. Its future is in doubt.

"Drawing from interviews with involuntary nondrivers from around the US and from her own experience, Zivarts explains how nondrivers get around and the changes necessary to make our communities more accessible. These changes include improving sidewalk connectivity; providing reliable and affordable transit and paratransit; creating more options for biking, scooting, and wheeling; building more affordable and accessible housing; and the understanding the unrecognized burden of asking and paying for rides.

Zivarts shows that it is critical to include people who can’t drive in transportation planning decisions. "

"One third of people living in the United States do not have a driver license. Because the majority of involuntary nondrivers are disabled, lower income, unhoused, formerly incarcerated, undocumented immigrants, kids, young people, and the elderly, they are largely invisible. The consequence of this invisibility is a mobility system designed almost exclusively for drivers. This system has human-health, environmental, and quality-of-life costs for everyone, not just for those excluded from it. If we’re serious about addressing climate change and inequality, we must address our transportation system." #transportation #policy

Big change coming to car braking systems:

OLD: Mechanical brakes, with hoses, reservoirs, braking cylinders and control units

NEW: Brake-by-wire

The new system is MUCH lighter, which helps EVs get more miles per charge.

Side note: Bosch, the world's largest auto supplier, owns this new tech. And they are owned (94%) by a charity (Robert Bosch Stiftung).

Bosch’s new brake-by-wire system removes the mechanical link between the brake system and the brake pedal
New Atlas · Bosch’s brake-by-wire system may be the next big leap in automotive techBosch just completed testing on its new new brake-by-wire technology on public roads. Its development team traveled more than 2,050 miles (3,300 km) across several climate zones to reach the Arctic Circle in six days ... in a Nissan hatchback.
