The faction currently in control of UAW 4811 sold disabled workers out early during the last contract bargaining.

Some are arguing they're selling out marginalized workers again. UC Davis Cultural Studies Graduate Students Association is urging a no vote on the tentative agreement.

UAW 4811, representing almost 50K student workers at the University of California, votes to strike over UC response to student pro-Palestine protests.

'The union has five demands, including amnesty for students and faculty who were arrested, as well as divestment from companies that are profiting from the war in Gaza. They also want researchers to be able to opt out from funding sources tied to the military or "oppression of Palestinians."'

UAW Local 4811, which represents academic student workers at the University of California, authorized a strike vote in response to this morning's attack on the Gaza Solidarity Encampment at UCLA.

"At an emergency executive board meeting this morning, our union’s leadership voted to hold a strike authorization vote as early as next week to give the Executive Board authority to call a strike if circumstances justify: should the university decide to curtail the right to participate in protected, concerted activity; discriminate against union members or political viewpoints; and create or allow threats to members’ health and safety, among others, UAW 4811 members will take any and all actions necessary to enforce our rights."

We let @CalMatters know at that time, along with other media. They did not deem it worthy of coverage because they want to treat things as a human interest story rather than as systemic oppression & systemic failure.

This could have been dealt with years earlier if media had listened to us when we said this was a systemic problem, not just a problem for one or two disabled students. It shouldn't take a disabled student being in student government to get coverage of these issues. @academicchatter @disability

The administrator, Sandra Eileen Le, served as academic program officer for UCSF’s School of Nursing’s post-master’s and special studies certificate programs. Le allegedly told students to make out their tuition checks to her or to a merchandiser she purchased from or to leave the payee line blank. She deposited checks into her personal account or joint accounts shared with associates and spent the money on luxury items from that merchandiser and other personal expenses, including gambling and home improvement. She reportedly gave false payment and enrollment records to the university.

@disability @academicchatter The UC Access Demandifesto is up on Internet Archive for all to read. It's easy to see what we were pointing out through the Demandifesto (and subsequent publications via our social media outlets) and what has filtered down into the language of the UC Systemwide Advisory Workgroup on Students with Disabilities to which we were not invited to contribute.

The appropriation and erasure contributed to the burnout (i.e. actual worsening of health) of core working members of UC Access Now. Don't let them erase our work.

We'd write the Demandifesto a bit differently now. Within months after publishing it, we called for the dismantling of the offices of rationing accessibility that UC runs.

Good news: UC Access Now's work continue to prod a teeny bit of progress from UC, Associated Students, and others.

Bad news: Most of the time we point out injustice & present evidence, we are not invited to the table when it comes to decisionmaking.

Some of the things mentioned here are things the UC Access Now Demandifesto laid out in July of 2020.

Don't let UC or anyone else erase the work UC Access Now has done.They erase the hard work we've done, which encourages burnout. If they're successful erasing grassroots movements, they extinguish desire to organize for positive change that's an equal seat that the table rather than rationed scraps. @disability @academicchatter

Application period for student regent opened up. Applications due by March 11.

"The selected student regent will serve next year for a one-year, nonvoting term as regent-designate, which is followed by a one-year, full-voting term through 2026. The regent represents the student bodies across all 10 UC campuses, and UC undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply, with the deadline being March 11.

The first two roles of the student regent listed on the application flier are representing the UC’s 294,000 students as a voting member and influencing a variety of policies regarding students’ experiences. All tuition and fees for the selected regent will be waived, and they earn a stipend while serving on the board."
