Bellamy was an American author and socialist political activist, most well-known for his utopian novel, “Looking Backward,” one of the most commercially successful books published in the 19th century. It particularly appealed to the intellectuals who were alienated by the Gilded Age greed, corruption and violence. His book inspired many to form so-called “nationalist clubs” to implement his ideas of a society free of private property, social classes, war, poverty, crime, lawyers, politicians, prostitution, merchants, soldiers, and taxes. Plus, everyone could retire by the age of 45. UCPH Degrowth Network*A lecture on Degrowth Utopianism* Yesterday was session 3 of our <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/Degrowth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Degrowth</a> and Socioecological Justice course at the University of Copenhagen, co-organized by Rebecca Rutt and <a href="https://fediscience.org/@FerRacimo" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@FerRacimo</a> . This time, the course featured Assoc. Prof. Mikkel Krause Frantzen from the Department of Arts and Cultural Studies and Jeppe Sørensen as representative of Den Grønne Ungdomsbevægelse (The Green Youth Movement) and the ecological publishing house Økotopia. They hosted a great session on "Degrowth Utopianism", opening up a space to critically think about how to work towards utopias in the here and now. We wrote our own visions of <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/utopia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#utopia</a> in a futuring exercise, and delved into many sci-fi works. The lecture was centered around discussion of the article “Imaginaries of Hope: The Utopianism of Degrowth” by Kallis and March, as well as Ursula Le Guin’s essay “A Non-Euclidean View of California as a Cold Place to Be” ( <a href="https://cpb-us-e1.wpmucdn.com/sites.ucsc.edu/dist/9/20/files/2019/07/1989a_Le-Guin_non-Euclidean-view-California.pdf" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank">https://cpb-us-e1.wpmucdn.com/sites.ucsc.edu/dist/9/20/files/2019/07/1989a_Le-Guin_non-Euclidean-view-California.pdf</a> ), with its famous quote: “It seems that the utopian imagination is trapped, like capitalism and industrialism and the human population, in a one-way future consisting only of growth. Solarpunk Presents Podcast7.2: Ariel & Christina Discuss: Why Must Utopia Be Cruel?In this episode, Ariel and Christina try to get to the bottom of why our fictional visions of utopia are so negative. They often involve mindless acquiescence to an authoritarian nanny state, the oppression and labor of an underclass, or both. It’s as if we can’t imagine a situation in which we all voluntarily treat each other (reasonably) decently and life can be good for everyone. We discuss the literary origins of utopia, how it has evolved (or not) as a concept, and Ariel gives a few examples of sci-fi futures that are about as close to her style of solarpunk utopia as can be.
