#Google #GoogleChrome #AdBlockers #AdBlocking: "Google’s new rules will likely affect almost all Chromium browsers, including Chrome and Microsoft Edge (a support page from Microsoft shows that Edge is also losing access to the Web Request API). While that sounds bleak, you still have a couple of options to keep blocking ads like you always have.

For now, there’s an easy but temporary solution to get uBlock Origin or other Manifest V2 ad blockers working again: just turn them back on.

According to Google’s Chromium blog, while the company is currently in the process of automatically disabling all Manifest V2 extensions, which is what your current ad blocker probably is, it will temporarily allow users to manually turn them back on “for a short time.” This toggle will go away “over time,” but given that not everyone is even getting their extensions disabled yet—it seems to be happening in waves, and my uBlock Origin works fine at the moment—you should still see it for now.

If Chrome tells you that it’s turned off your ad blocker, follow these steps to re-enable it."

Lifehacker · Google Is Cracking Down on Ad Blockers, But Here's How You Can Fight BackGoogle is starting to shut down uBlock Origin and other older ad blockers for Chrome, but there are steps you can take to keep blocking ads just like you always have.

Are there any #adBlockers for #iOS #Safari that actually work? I've been using Wipr, but browsing the web on my phone is a consistently horrendous experience. The only saving grace is the new VoiceOver rotor option to disable live regions for a particular site, which I'm essentially turning off for all article webpages because the situation is so bad.

I love it so much!

Firefox has made it SO EASY to switch to Firefox from Chrome, that you dont even lose your OPEN TABS.

Have you got 34 open tabs lol? And you lost uBlock ad-blocker today? (You did, you lost your ad blocker, because Google)

You dont even lose open Tabs! (And you get to install uBlock)

Fancy that.

so it turns out uBlock Origin has been configured to block the 0.0.0.0-day exploit a single day after it was published, making it one of the fastest tools to deploy a solution.

use content blockers. they may just save you from a hack.

“It looks like you’re using an ad blocker.”

That’s right, website! See, I have a legally-binding (whether you read it or not, or even know it exists) Terms of Use for ‘Leigh’s Devices which prohibits the display of distracting and/or disrupting ads. But like sooooo many other websites, you have elected to consistently violate my TOU. So I have put in place technological means to enforce them. I’m sure you can understand my position. To resolve your problem, please add the IP address block 0.0.0.0/0 to your “don’t serve ads” list. Thanks for your support!!!

(#adblockers are #accessibility tech, I’m 100% serious.)

"the German publishing giant Axel Springer ... is suing Eyeo, makers of Adblock Plus, on the grounds that changing HTML to block an ad creates a 'derivative work' of Axel Springer's web-pages"

@pluralistic

There's a reason some of us have a hair trigger around anything that touches on copyright. Corporations are constantly probing for ways to weaponise it against us all.

#Google Chrome to phase out #Manifest V2 extensions starting June 3, complete by early 2025

Starts today. #Adblockers have been updated or have manifest v3 versions that are not as effective as v2 versions (mostly talking about uBlock Origin here). The issue with v3 is that it essentially weakens Adblockers’ effectiveness.

This is a great time for making #firefox or one of its maintained forks your main browser. Just saying.

I'm saying this again: #Chrominum's #ManifestV2 shutdown and replaced with #ManifestV3 is going to open the door for DNS-based #adblockers to become even more popular and useful as we'll see other browsers follow suit eventually in reducing adblockers' effectiveness. theregister.com/2024/05/31/goo

The Register · Google to push ahead with Chrome's ad-blocker extension overhaul in earnestBy Thomas Claburn

This is pretty amazing! People are taking my WordPress plugin that lets you warn site visitors if they don't have an ad-blocking browser plugin installed, and making versions of the project for non-WordPress sites.
