The GOP was not a cult -- or from what I understand, it wasn't a fully #AntiDemocratic machine until Gingrich stepped up & turned them away from a big tent able to tolerate difference and toward a more authoritarian structured party pursuing total power and demanding utter conformity.
The turning away began under Reagan, of course, but under Clinton was when it was codified and the Republican centrists began to be primaried.
