Ale glasses

Due to the interminable wars with the French, drinking French wine was seen as unpatriotic in the Georgian period, so better-off Brits drank strong ale instead. At around 10% ABV, this was drunk from conical ale glasses, capacity about 4 ounces.
The glass shown below dates from about 1790-1800. At 6 inches tall, it is a 'short ale', meaning it has a shorter stem than a true ale glass but a longer one than a 'dwarf ale'.

A Georgian 'Short ale' glass. It was made in 3 parts: bowl, stem and foot which were formed separately and then put together. Engraved with barley and hops to show it's use and with the owners initials, BJS. The engraving was done by holding the glass against a rotating abrasive wheel.

Tried typing a letter to sis and my arms are exhausted!

There's no exclamation on the Corona, you type a period then backspace and type shifted-8 which is some kind of "bang” character. I can mostly touch type, not with amazing speed, but it is also easy to miss the home position because the J & F don't have a little bump on them. “:^)

My son has been into govt, history, military, and old things generally. So at first he expressed an interest in another WW2 army uniform (khaki) this year. But after a bit he sent me a link to a George Washington costume! Interests aligned! Apparently it’s the coat that caught his eye. I’m curious if he’ll wear the wig and hat. 😁

This fascinating piece of toy history tells us more than just about the post-war era. Here we see a Japanese tin toy car, probably made in the late 1940s or early 1950s. What's special about it? It was crafted from a recycled fish can! On the underside, we can see Japanese characters that point to a fisheries company from Tokyo. This creative reuse of materials not only shows the scarcity of resources after the war but also the ingenuity of the time. A true one-of-a-kind piece with an intriguing story!
