More Sylvian & Co., working backwards through the first 2 albums.

Before today, it had been a while since I listened to any Japan front to back, & the 2 I chose today are ones I’ve listened to least over the years.
It was like hearing them for the first time again, as I’m usually throwing on Tin Drum or Gentleman Take Polaroids.
“Don’t Rain On My Parade” & “The Unconventional” are the 💎 here.

23 March 1973 saw the release of Roxy Music's landmark second album, 'For Your Pleasure', the last to capture the intensity of two rapidly diverging creators, Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno together.

"For Your Pleasure walks the tightrope between the experimental and the accessible, creating a new vocabulary for rock bands, and one that was exploited heavily in the ensuing decade."

These “Radio Broadcast” pressings are always very hit or miss, & even though these Peel Sessions as well as clips from their appearance on Something Else have appeared on countless other bootlegs, this one sounded pretty good when I tested it at the store.
Not bad for 15 bucks from a used bin.

The prompt is Xeno-
Peter Gabriel. “Not One of Us” 1980

Stepping away from my usual use of the prompt as literal text and going conceptual on this one, using the concept of xenophobia.

#PeterGabriel had the idea of issuing successive albums under just his name, like issues of a periodical. This made identifying his albums tough, so the album featuring this track is often referred to as “Peter Gabriel 3” (his third solo album) or “Melt” based on the cover graphic of his face seeming to melt.

The stripped-down #punk/ #postpunk aesthetic pointedly eschewed the excesses of #Prog(ressive) or #ArtRock bands, so I’ve puzzled over the likes of Peter Gabriel and #RobertFripp emerging from such bands (#Genesis and #KingCrimson respectively), and producing taut, lean music embracing/embraced by this #NewWave (pun intended). I don't know - could it be about talented people giving up drugs (or drug-soaked colleagues)?
