Fine, purchased a spoke wrench from the LBS. Hopefully don't need a truing stand to fix the slight wobble in a wheel I have. Did you know there are eight million size of spoke wrench? I bought a circular one with every size, because I had no idea which one I needed. (minor... but it's bugging me). #BikeTooter #spokes #bikerepair #bicycling

Random bike observation:

Shortcut to determining a bicycle's quality (if it has shifters) is just to look at the class of shifter/dereilleur group.

"No name" and/or "named after car brand" : Very low quality, stay away! (ex: Anything Huffy. No-name random Amazon/Walmart brand.)

Low end: Not a great bike, but rideable. Stuff will break, cheap components, but cheap to replace. (Shimano Tourney/Altus/Acera/Alivio)

Mid-range: Improvement, probably a decent bike.(Shimano Tiagra, Shimano 105, Shimano 600, Deore)

High end: Oooh, really good bike. Even if old! Especially if old! Fixable! Worth it especially if <$150 (Dura Ace/Ultegra/Deore XT/XTR)

Bicycling Monterey 💚🌎🌍🌏

Among the most satisfying of the numerous Bicycling Monterey projects bikemonterey.org/about/financi is providing an alternative to fines for people who receive citations while biking bikemonterey.org/bike-equity-p.

As we pointed out at the last #CalBike Policy Advisory Council meeting, although California legislation allows for a $25 fine for helmet citation (for minors), court costs mean that $25 becomes $193 in our county courts.

Tonight’s letter writing (below) provides one example of saving a local family money—in this case, $386, as the minor had received two citations. We do our best to tailor each minor’s community service to their individual learning style and family circumstances.

A letter from Bicycling Monterey is too long to include all in this window; excerpts below. Names are redacted. This is to advise the court that the stepmother and father of a minor, contacted Bicycling Monterey, asking that be allowed to do four hours of community service, which he has completed…. They all met with me in person on March 15th. The purpose of our meeting was for to receive real-world/hands-on instruction to help him become a stronger role model for his peers and others on the bikeways, a practical way to serve his community. First we all visited together about some bicycling topics, including the importance of being visible (e.g., using bike lights and reflectors) and being predictable (e.g., using hand signals). Then and I spent three hours biking. Our route included biking from the Monterey Fairgrounds up to Fort Ord Dunes State Park parking lot and back. This included sharing streets with cars, e.g., biking Fairground Rd and Casa Verde in Monterey, including crossing busy Fremont Ave and Del Monte Ave; and biking Tioga Ave and Metz Rd in Sand City, as well as sharing the Monterey Bay coastal trail with others using active transportation, i.e., biking or walking. (We did not come upon skaters/scooters.) We experienced and had some initial discussion about the challenges of streets where there is a bike lane that ends, or where there is no bike lane at all, as well as the hazards of crosswalks and other intersection issues.
