Plum blossom. April 2017

Close-up photo of a plum blossom, on its first full day out as a flower. White petals are splayed out on two brightly lit flowers but we're seeing them edge-wise mostly so what we really see are white stringy things poking out from the center of the flowers. I'm shaky on the names and can't be arsed to look it up, but they're either pistils or stamens, talkin about flower porn. There are 3 bright green leaves in a trefoil pattern below the two flowers, all at the top of a stem rising from the bottom of the image. There are dark gray stems below and behind the flowers, the background is shades of dark green. Taken in one of the many natural refuges scattered around Fort Collins and Larimer County, CO. It’s #azalea season in #BatonRouge #Louisiana and this time I thought I’d share the white flowering variety. These particular shrubs were formed into a hedge in front of a historical bungalow in the #SpanishTown neighborhood. I figured they would be of interest to #bloomscrolling and #gardening. The key to getting these type of blooms is not to prune in the fall after the buds are set. If you do that you will only see flowers on the inside of the shrub.

Claytonia sarmentose, also called spring beauty, is one of the early wildflowers I start looking for each year. The curled stigma is one of its most distinctive features.

Afternoon garden: I found forsythia and vinca abloom.

Looking top-down into the center of a forsythia shrub with many smaller stems radiating outward from the large central stem, and many bright, yellow, four-petaled blossoms on those smaller stems, like little origami birds.

A single, deep purple, five-petaled vinca flower in bloom near the ground amidst the dark-green and yellow-green leaves on its viny stems.

The tightly curled stamens of a Bottlebrush (Callistemon) just starting to burst from their buds

Numerous tightly-packed buds of thin, bright-red filaments wrapped together. Each bud is spaced evenly around a central stem, and wrapped in soft, slightly hairy green calyxes. The buds on each side of the cluster are further advanced, and we can see the filaments uncurling like an octopuses tentacles
