In other words, Generative AI and LLMs lack a sound epistemology and that's very problematic...:

"Bullshit and generative AI are not the same. They are similar, however, in the sense that both mix true, false, and ambiguous statements in ways that make it difficult or impossible to distinguish which is which. ChatGPT has been designed to sound convincing, whether right or wrong. As such, current AI is more about rhetoric and persuasiveness than about truth. Current AI is therefore closer to bullshit than it is to truth. This is a problem because it means that AI will produce faulty and ignorant results, even if unintentionally.
(...)
Judging by the available evidence, current AI – which is generative AI based on large language models – entails artificial ignorance more than artificial intelligence. That needs to change for AI to become a trusted and effective tool in science, technology, policy, and management. AI needs criteria for what truth is and what gets to count as truth. It is not enough to sound right, like current AI does. You need to be right. And to be right, you need to know the truth about things, like AI does not. This is a core problem with today's AI: it is surprisingly bad at distinguishing between truth and untruth – exactly like bullshit – producing artificial ignorance as much as artificial intelligence with little ability to discriminate between the two.
(...)
Nevertheless, the perhaps most fundamental question we can ask of AI is that if it succeeds in getting better than humans, as already happens in some areas, like playing AlphaZero, would that represent the advancement of knowledge, even when humans do not understand how the AI works, which is typical? Or would it represent knowledge receding from humans? If the latter, is that desirable and can we afford it?"

On nonsense: Forms thereof, falsifiability, pseudoscience, bullshit, youth culture, and other craziness

I'd begun worrying about the resilience of truth and countermeasures to bullshit particularly online well over a decade ago.

This is an early compilation of heuristics and resources which came up in discussion elsewhere recently, and may be helpful to others.

Among conspicuous omissions, Aristotle's "Sophistical Refutations" (Sophistikoi Elenchoi in the original Greek), one of the earliest recorded (or surviving) guides to countering bullshit:

@godpod

DEI initiatives were all #performative #bullshit anyway. Really heavy on crafting a public image, with plenty of internal and external #propaganda and #marketing. #Target is not interested in actually supporting marginalized communities, just increasing profits.

The annual #pride stuff was the epitome of it. They only sold Pride goods in June but never year round. When right wingers put pressure on them for it, they folded like empty soda cans in a 24 ton hydraulic press.

Seven of the #RPG books I worked on were pirated by #Meta to train their #AI #Bullshit

Regardless as to my feelings on copyright, the IP owner did not consent to their inclusion in the dataset.

Meta's use is fundamentally immoral to the point that my own works will have an exclusion to their existing permissive licences to say "Fuck you and your idiot autocorrect"

See if they've pirated your work here: theatlantic.com/technology/arc

The #whitehouse explanation for why they need #Starlink should be included in #teaching materials in #computer #networks, #infrastructure, #wifi -

as an example for how things DO NOT work,
and what DOES NOT make any sense.

Except of course the #design goal is something else than what you are communicating altogether.

#bullshit #gaslighting

To subvert the truth, you must first know it, or at least think you do.

That’s not Trump’s game.

As Harry Frankfurt puts it, “It is impossible for someone to lie unless he thinks he knows the truth. Producing #bullshit requires no such conviction.”

Trump doesn’t have to check the nation’s unemployment and inflation rates to assert that “we inherited from the last administration an economic catastrophe and an inflation nightmare.”

He doesn’t have to know anything about the Paris accord to claim it is “costing us trillions of dollars.”

It just doesn’t matter to him
