Dr Helen Wilson<p>Hound Tor Deserted Medieval Village, Dartmoor</p><p>This settlement, situated about 350m above sea level, consists of a cluster of C13 granite longhouses, in which people lived at one end and animals at the other, on land that was originally farmed in the Bronze Age. Hound Tor was probably deserted in the early C14 as widespread falling temperatures and rising rainfall caused crop failures and cattle disease, that hit this upland community badly.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Devon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Devon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Dartmoor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Dartmoor</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Medieval" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Medieval</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Longhouse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Longhouse</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Architecture</span></a></p>

Dr Helen Wilson<p>Merrivale Ceremonial Centre, Dartmoor</p><p>Menhir of 3.1m, part of a wonderfully preserved complex including two double stone rows, stone circles and burial cairns. The menhir stands apart from most of the site in a small group consisting of a 3-stone row (once 5), two cairns and a stone circle. Dr Helen Wilson<p>The Grey Wethers Stone Circles, Dartmoor</p><p>Part of a Scheduled Monument that includes three round cairns, two ring cairns and an oval enclosure. The two stone circles, collectively known as The Grey Wethers, are quite similar. One is 31.5m diameter and has 20 upright stones, while the other is 33m and has 29 standing stones. The close proximity of several monuments makes this an important ritual site. 📸 : <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@morgrugyn" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>morgrugyn</span></a></span> with permission</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/StandingStoneSunday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>StandingStoneSunday</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Devon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Devon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Dartmoor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Dartmoor</span></a></p>
littlerachyb<p>At the top of Higher hator tor you can look down at the valley. Huge huts and cairns are scattered over both sides of the Plym. littlerachyb<p>I cross the streams and head up the gentle slope of Higher Hator tor, following the path along the stone rows. They are so impressive! Visible from a way off, with huge menhirs at each end. One, the bone stone, over 4 meters tall. It's kinda breathtaking. </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/walking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>walking</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hiking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hiking</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Dartmoor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Dartmoor</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/StandingStoneSunday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>StandingStoneSunday</span></a></p>
littlerachyb<p>I start by skirting the edge of Whittenknowles Rocks, a medieval village that looks across to the older site. The definition of much of the huts and walls is still clear. They lived close together, huddled. Maybe that was cosy and safe feeling on the wide wild hill.</p><p>Good write up of the site here.</p><p><a href="https://www.torsofdartmoor.co.uk/tor-page.php?tor=whittenknowles-rocks" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">torsofdartmoor.co.uk/tor-page.</span><span class="invisible">php?tor=whittenknowles-rocks</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Dartmoor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Dartmoor</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hiking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hiking</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/walking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>walking</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/StandingStoneSunday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>StandingStoneSunday</span></a></p>

Dr Helen Wilson<p>Down Tor Stone Row, Dartmoor</p><p>One of the best peserved stone rows on Dartmoor. Situated on Hingston Hill, the row is 316m long with an almost 3 m tall menhir at one end and a 1.5 m stone at other. Between them are 157 stones, but it's thought there would have been more.
