@aral you should add “closed minded #hivemind #hipster shitting on entire classes of technologies and problem spaces that I refuse to take the time to understand” to your CV.

Don’t come crying to the crypto devs you mocked when your country sends you your tax return in a central bank digital currency with a spending time-limit that can be tracked FOREVER.

#decentralization seems to be a problem that you won’t understand until you are utterly imprisoned by centralization.

"Usenet Reborn" is an Usenet and NNTP TUI client in Rust language, in alpha stage!
- sr.ht/~rek2/Usenet_Reborn/
Now that I have a 1.0.1 released for my #NNTP library called "rek2_nntp" crates.io/crates/rek2_nntp was able to go ahead and get "Usenet Reborn" client in a usable stage a brand new #usenet client in #TUI format using the #ratatui #rust #libs not a rust expert so patches are WELLCOME to both projects! #hackers #hackerculture #decentralization

The #CoSocialist Future

An interesting article about cosocial.ca/ by @timbray - If you're interested in running community services, you should read it.

They take Canadian paying customers only (50 Can$), got 200 ppl after 2y and will hire their first paid employee soon.

Shameless plug:
info.graz.social is also providing paid memberships which supports efforts to educate the masses about #Fediverse and #decentralization for people in and around #Graz (and I'm part of @wir). Meet us at #GLT25 on April 26: linuxtage.at/en/

Consider a membership or a donation to your team of choice that runs a #communityservice! 🙇

Before the modern internet, Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) were the backbone of online communication. Emerging in the late 1970s, BBSes were text-based systems accessed via dial-up modems, where users could post messages, share files, and even play primitive online games. These digital meeting places became hubs for underground communities, tech enthusiasts, hackers, and early software distribution networks.

Despite being largely replaced by the web, BBSes never truly died. Today, a dedicated community keeps them alive using telnet and modern technology, ensuring that the spirit of decentralized, independent online spaces lives on. Whether through retro computing nostalgia, hacker culture, or a desire for an internet free from corporate control, BBSes continue to thrive in small but passionate circles.

I said it before on Mastodon. I'm reposting this again. Comparing #DeltaChat and #Matrix together, if you want hassle free and consistent messenger for private #E2EE chats, don't go for Matrix. DeltaChat is way better.

However, if you want something like a public forum, or a public chatroom, don't go for DeltaChat. Matrix is way better suited for that. And DeltaChat does not support public groups at all. In DeltaChat groups, there is no admin or moderator and everyone have got permission to remove or add the others.

I think I have to write a longer post on my personal blog about these two, comparing them together.

PS: Another Matrix encryption bug few minutes ago triggered repost of this.

Created in 1988 by Jarkko Oikarinen in Finland, IRC was designed to enable real-time, text-based communication over the internet. Inspired by the multi-user talk programs on UNIX systems, Oikarinen wanted a system that was more flexible and scalable.

IRC quickly became the backbone of online communities in the 90s and early 2000s, hosting discussions ranging from programming and hacking to gaming and general socializing. Unlike modern chat services, IRC was entirely decentralized—anyone could set up a server, create channels, and communicate without corporate control.

Though its popularity has declined with the rise of modern platforms, IRC still thrives among enthusiasts, open-source communities, and privacy advocates who prefer its lightweight, no-nonsense approach to online chat.

Congrats to @johnonolan and the team at Ghost, which today announced a public beta for users to connect their publications to the fediverse. If you're in their beta, you'll be able to find, follow and interact with people and publications on platforms including Ghost, WordPress, Threads, Mastodon, BlueSky, Flipboard and more. Get details in the blogpost here. If you want to know more about Ghost's approach to decentralization and the open social web, check out John's DotSocial conversation with @mike at the second link.

A possible solution to this conundrum probably lies in the #decentralization of ‘people’ and ‘stuff’ and ‘common good’.

People semi organized in ‘cells’ (to fight #Government),

Decentralized local (IT) systems to battle (centralized, monopolist, globally operating #corpos)

Guaranteed Basic Income + Housing as a fundamental constitutional human right (so no one needs to become a criminal)

#Capitalism is a choice for a failed system, just like #communism. We can do so much better…

From the community-organizing power of the hashtag to decentralization and the massive shifts ignited by AI, @chrismessina threads the needle on it all. The inventor of the hashtag joins @mike on the latest episode of Dot Social:
