♡ Eva Winterschön ♡<p>Permutations of the simplest system service: IPMI SoL ... check evvvverrrrrything everrrrywhere... validate across same SKUs... 🧠 ✨ </p><p>- What works:<br> the usual settings for SoL on FreeBSD + Supermicro and Dell servers</p><p>- What doesn't work<br> SystemD managing a convoluted tangled mess called "serial-agetty@ttyS0.service"</p><p>Yes, I checked grub. Yes, I checked grubby. Yes, I checked kmods, and initrd, and the BIOS, and the serial redirection params, and the IRQ assignments, and and and and this is not new territory for me in the slightest, so just assume I checked anything else you might want to propose.</p><p>- What worked?<br> Stopping the systemd takeover service and running agetty directly on ttyS0 just like all those years of doing the same thing on Linux before SystemD decided to "imProVeD seRveRs eVerYwh3re init PID ZeR0s lolz""</p><p>So now I'll have to ditch the systemd delegated-failure service with proper service management handler and move on with life. Well, after I document the changes sufficiently to prevent lost hours in the future... and cover those changes via Ansible workflow to ensure future provisioned systems don't need any manual attention.</p><p>Change for the sake of change is not change, it's waste and inefficiency. Keep your grubby hands off my UNIX & BSD systems -- you know, where "things just work". Oh but please let's not bother with a discussion around how systemd is somehow better, when most people saying such things have never worked in the lower layers of the OS to start with.</p><p>Maybe I should track all of SystemD's pointless failures over on <a href="https://systemd.wtf" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">systemd.wtf</span><span class="invisible"></span></a> 😆 </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>linux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/distro" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>distro</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/fails" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fails</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/systemSucks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>systemSucks</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/systemdWastesTime" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>systemdWastesTime</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/systemdSucksAgain" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>systemdSucksAgain</span></a></p>
