The XMPP Software Foundation has published an open letter to Meta, asking them to support true messaging interoperability using the XMPP protocol.
Meta had previously integrated this protocol, and WhatsApp is actually built on XMPP for its message routing system.
We support this initiative as it represents the best approach for genuine interoperability. Federation is the way to go !

Anybody know of a good alternative to #matrix for #e2ee #decentralized chat?
Consieering #xmpp again. Have tried #jami
#matrix is pretty good but maintaining it is more hassle than I'd like, and my local users don't really benefit from the #federation aspect much.
Just shopping I guess
@gvwilson I would go a step beyond #federation and suggest that the solution for hosting the world’s #OpenSource should be a #peerToPeer one.
#p2p means even individuals can “seed” content they want to maintain on the network, so when institutions get shut down, individuals - in their numbers - can take action.
But then again, I work on @radicle , so I’m clearly biased! ;)
The #Fediverse is growing and we're welcoming more and more new single user instances but #federation can become challenging.
With #Relay instances, single user and smaller instances can quickly become federated and grow which is supported by many Fediverse applications like #snac #snac2 #Mastodon #Pleroma etc.

"That’s the fun part about the fediverse — it’s a lot of old ideas about the web being open and interoperable, but there’s still a lot of new things yet to be invented on top of that foundation. At this point I’m not sure any social platform that launches without an eye towards federation stands a chance, really."

#XMPP is used by billions of people in the closed, non-free manifestation of Whatsapp, Google FCM, and applications like Zoom, Fortnite, Grindr, and many more. At least, that shows us, that the techology works.
XMPP or #Jabber in the sense of an open and free #federation is a niche, indeed. Network effect, lack of marketing and very often lack of appealing client design are to blame. Jabber just does not have multi million VC funding.
#putin said that he needed to get rid of the underlying reason to the #UkraineWar before he could consider a #ceasefire in #Ukraine
#Zelensky commented that he would look forward for putin's abdication as the #dictator of #nazi #russian #federation and hoped the #election of the next #president would be a democratic and fair election.
Little known fact: @evan and I worked at a startup in 2020 that never launched. It wasn't a great experience for me, but I loved the team we had hired, including Evan. I didn't know much then about #activitypub or the social web.
I went back to @Flipboard in 2021 and in 2023 I started to learn about #federation because of @mike's vision. Fast forward to 2025, Flipboard + @surf are organizing #SXSW's first #FediverseHouse. Evan was one of the first people to sign on, which created a snowball from there, which helped the event be a success.
This week, we got to meet IRL for the first time! So when I think about "the purpose" of that hard 10 months at that startup, I now know what it was.
The “Take It Down” Act is why we can NOT trust any server in the USA any longer. Yay #federation. Fuck #fascism
@newyorktimes's veteran tech reporter @Markoff interviewed some of #TeamFediverse including @Gargron, @reckless1280 and our CEO @mike for a feature on the rise of decentralized social media. “It goes back to the original principles where the internet started out as decentralized,” Eugen Rochko told Markoff. Here's the full story [may be paywalled].
We're so excited to develop these conversations further at SXSW this weekend — check out the itinerary and sign up to join us at #FediverseHouse at the second link.
On m'aurait trompé ?
#codeberg is #GoodEnough to replace #Github and #Gitlab for 95% of your FOSS projects, IMHO. Or you can take it to the next level and run your own #Forgejo instance as a (rootless) container, completely self-contained. And (hopefully) soon we will see more #federation features in #Forgejo, leading to a decentralised network of forges that can talk to each other to form a sustainable and resilient global network. (FTR: I've been running my Forgejo instance since 1.5 years now, no problems) 1/6
Thanks for adding IM to your lists!
However, so far only centralised silos, walled gardens are listed. I suggest to add at least #Quicksy by @daniel, which is hosted at Hetzner in DE, and is part of the #Jabber/#XMPP #federation.
(Thanks for mentioning TeleGuard. Never heard of it before. I'm an IM collector )
Jeg har lige oprettet mig, men bare helt almindeligt med et brugernavn og min email. Jeg kan se at nogle af jer ser ud til at skrive herinde via Mastodon - hvordan fungerer det?
@eloy I can’t wait until the technology is consistent enough that I don’t have to choose one of the mega-platforms and just run my own. #Federation for all!
Tech is political, yes. Let’s unpack the key *political* concepts behind *technical* features that indicate a good sign (singular because they have to be complete) for platforms:
1. #Decentralization - expression of celebrating multiple cultures. For-profit organizations will do their best to dilute this concept because multiple voices are harder to sell
2. #Federation - the layer on top of decentralization that allows interaction between cultures; it facilitates “crossing borders”
3. #SelfHosting - empowering individuals and communities to have sovereignty on their digital lives
@aral #Codeberg and #Forgejo are absolute jewels. If you care about #opensource, #federation, #selfhosting, or just want a low maintenance, high quality #git based experience, I highly recommend them.
