Things I miss from the UK: Flag Paints Rust Converter. Bought on recommendation from a fellow sailor. It's so good. Goes on dark grey, turns solid black as it does its thing and dries super fast. Then can be painted over (or left as is in nonexposed areas). Water based, so easy to clean tools and not very harmful.
It's way better than the usual phosphoric acid, not least of all because you can see what you have already painted.

This flag lasted 3 years in full wind, full sun, and full rain - Complete exposure to the elements, throughout the spring, summer, and fall. I tend not to take my flags down, except for winter.
As you can see, the first thing to go is the blue where the stars are. It starts to look a purple color. This one is, of course, being retired and not hung up this year. This was an Annin brand flag.

The brand, I usually, prefer is called, "Annin Flagmakers."
Their flags tend to last 2 years or so (Spring, Summer, Fall, I don't fly my flags during the winter). They cost a bit a more (averaging 30-60 dollars), but they hold up.
When they're unavailable, the next brand, which is hit-and-miss, is Anley. Anley is usually more affordable, but don't buy the cheap flag version, you really get what you pay for.

Denver Post: An upside-down American flag attached to Boulder’s Second Flatiron, noticed the latest round of federal employee layoffs hit NOAA and NWS offices across the country, has been removed by city staff.
"...Staff removed the flag to maintain the natural area, staying consistent with its practice of removing abandoned and unauthorized items and displays from open space lands, Phillip Yates, spokesperson for Boulder’s Open Space & Mountain Parks, said.
